In its fight against climate change deniers, Twitter has a new strategy.
With this strategy, Twitter joins the discourse of other platforms such as Google, Facebook and many more.
In the framework of Earth Day, Twitter has taken a new step in its fight against the “rebels” of climate changebanning all ads that contradict the environmental crisis.
Yesterday, April 22, Earth Day was celebrated, and the one who has not let it go is Twitter, the social network that tycoon Elon Musk wants to buy almost at all costs.
According to information from the platform itself, Twitter has a total of 1.3 billion accounts, of which only 330 million are active users. Countries like the United States and Japan are the ones with the largest number of users attached to this social network, with 77 million and 58 million users respectively.
These numbers, however, are far from what other platforms have to their credit. Data from Statista states that Facebook is the social network with the most users in the worldharboring almost three billion Internet users in its “portfolio”.
Now, probably, one of the movements that would most help Twitter to increase the number of users would be the arrival of Elon Musk, one of the most active and popular tweeters on the network, although that remains to be seen, since, as we have seen in recent days, the case has become very complex.
While that is being clarified, what has not stopped is Twitter’s desire to update itself and, with it, win over users of social networks, since, although we talk about one of the most popular platforms, the reality is that It is very far from those who lead the market.
That is why, for several months, various updates have been released in order to make browsing the web more bearable, one of the most recent being its “CC” button, with which users can activate and deactivate the subtitles in the videos that are uploaded to the platform.
Twitter against climate change deniers
On the other hand, what is still in conflict is the social network’s fight against content that contradicts the effects of climate change on the planet.
In that context, and Following in the footsteps of Google and Facebook, Twitter has also joined a campaign against climate change deniers.which is why he announced that he will ban ads that promote a look that contradicts the scientific consensus in relation to the environmental crisis.
“We believe that climate denialism should not be monetized on Twitter, and that misleading ads should not detract from important conversations about the climate crisis,” the company wrote in a statement.
To do this, that is, to decide what is legitimate content regarding climate change, Twitter will rely on “authoritative sources”, including the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), an organization that published recently a couple of reports on what must be done to adapt to the changes that are already taking place on a global scale and, above all, how to prevent the consequences from being even more serious in the future.
It should be noted that the ad ban is not Twitter’s only strategy against climate change deniers, but it has promised, soon, “add trusted and authoritative context to conversations”since “We recognize that misleading information about climate change can undermine efforts to protect the planet”explained the social network.
