- Twitch made the decision to change its prices, a fact that has caused the anger of streamers for considering it an unfair measure
- Twitch, Amazon’s platform, was starting to take off and gaining popularity
- Given this measure, Twitch could lose a large part of its community of streamers
Twitch’s decision to lower its prices has made streamers from all over the world jump to social networks to claim the platform because it threatens their income.
Twitch, Amazon’s platform, was beginning to take off and gaining popularity, especially in the field of video games, the application’s market par excellence.
The arrival of the pandemic meant a growth for the platform, due to the confinement to which the population around the world was subjected. According to data from Streamlabs and Stream Hatchet, Twitch figures increased 16.5 percent during the first quarter of 2021, reaching 17.5 million active users.
However, for many streamers there was no fair deal in terms of the income they receive from their content. This is due to the fact that the prices were subject to those of the United States, which is why in some countries the difference was greater compared to other streamers.
In other words, a user from Latin America did not perceive the same as one from the United States or Spain, to mention an example. Faced with this situation, Twitch had mentioned that it would take the pertinent actions to make the changes.
Today, the platform announced, yes, a modification in its prices, but, in reality, it is a reduction in the subscription cost, something that directly affects streamers in various regions.
For example, in Spain, the subscription cost was 4.99 euros and now it has a cost of 3.99, which will reduce the income of streamers by 20 percent. Similarly, in Brazil, the subscription cost 22.99 reais (approximately 3.64 euros) and now Twitch put the subscription price at 7.90 reais (approximately 125 euros).
As expected, this decision has made streamers jump to social networks to show their discontent, as they consider it an unfair measure not only because of the reduction itself, but because there is a fear of inequality that is causing an echo.
For streamers, subscription plans are not their only source of income, as many of them have agreements with some brands and there is also a method of donation from their followers. But, come on, this is a hard blow wherever you want to look at yourself.
In these times where social networks and digital platforms are consolidating as a real alternative source of income for those who are dedicated to the work of content creation.
Since the beginning of the pandemic and so far this year, we have noticed a rebound in platforms such as TikTok and, in fact, Twitch, the latter responding to the growing eSports market that is gaining more and more popularity thanks to the presence of streamers.
Given the complexity of the matter, this could also create a bad image for the platform, which, again, was beginning to attract more users and, consequently, the presence of brands was also an important element for this growth.
So far, it has not been reported if there will be more actions by streamers, but, if it continues along that line, the application could lose an important part of its content creators.
