On April 24, Turkey announced the donation to our country of a puppy in honor of Proteus, the canine pairing that died in the city of Adiyaman while participating in search and rescue tasks due to the February 6 earthquake that hit the country.
After days of waiting, a 3-month-old German Shepherd puppy flew from Turkey to our country on May 1st. The flight lasted about 15 hours and passed through countries such as Norway, Denmark, Poland, Greenland, Canada, and the United States.
Finally, this Tuesday, May 2, the tenderloin arrived at the Mexico City International Airport (AICM), where it was presented to the media.
Proteus II?
It should be noted that as soon as the Turkish country announced the donation, the Secretary of National Defense (SEDENA) started a campaign on social networks for users to vote for their favorite among three names: Proteus II (I protect), Arkadas (Friend) and Yardim (Help). The nickname that was winning on Tuesday night was Arkadas, with more than 20,000 votes.
In the same way, the puppy will be part of the canine pairings of the army, which are trained for various tasks in addition to rescue; guard and protection; drug detection; explosives and trace.
Also, who was Proteo’s handler, Military Police Corporal Carlos Villeda Márquez, will be the puppy’s new trainer, who will begin his training in a month at Military Camp number 1, in search and rescue.
a hero leaves
Proteo passed away on February 12 due to the weather conditions that prevailed in Turkey after the earthquake; but before, the dog supported the rescue of a minor and the recovery of 14 bodies.
Finally, as the legend said on the t-shirts of the students of the Technical Secondary School No. 30 who were present at the AICM to receive the new puppy, it is true that “A hero leaves, but another follows his legacy”Therefore, we wish the new member of the army a long life and much success in his rescue efforts.
