It seems that Vegeta’s son is a particular saiyan…
Although Broly is a legendary level Super Saiyan, capable of endangering our group of protagonists, he is still someone who can be surpassed in Dragon Ball, and Vegeta confirms that the honor goes to Trunks, his own son. Before continuing, we recommend that you read the last chapters of this work that can be found available on the online service MangaPlus by ShueishaWell, we’ll cover some major spoilers..
In Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball chapter 333, we meet Future Trunks who has arrived in the past from his alternate future with a warning about the imminent threat of androids. The person Trunks really wanted to talk to was Goku, but he was still training at the time and wouldn’t be back on Earth for another three hours. Then, Trunks starts talking to the rest of the Z Fighters who are still they were trying to find out who exactly he was, especially Vegeta.
Vegeta hated the fact that a random person would show up who was already more powerful than him (as shown when Trunks killed Frieza like it was nothing). Not only that, but Trunks claims to be a Saiyan, and Vegeta refuses to believe that despite seeing Trunks go Super Saiyan moments ago, already the thing he sticks to the most to prove his point is Trunks’ hair color. As Vegeta points out in this chapter, all Saiyans in existence have black hair, including Broly, but Trunks appears to have blue (or purple) hair. While something like Trunks’ hair color seems insignificant, the fact that all Saiyans have black hair actually rings true even across the multiverse, which really shines a light on just how weird Trunks’ hair color is, even. with Bulma as her mother.
Literally all saiyans have black hair in their base form, including half saiyans like Gohan and Goten. Even when looking at those from Universe 6 (as opposed to Universe 7’s main Dragon Ball timeline), we can see alternate versions of the Saiyan race, all with black hair. This indicates that Trunks is truly the greatest anomaly in the history of his race’s culture., even more than the Legendary Super saiyan. In the tradition of Akira Toriyama’s universe, Legendary Super Saiyans occur every thousand years, and Dragon Ball Super showed that multiple universes have their own Legendary Super Saiyans and each one is different from one another.
Dragon Ball confirms that Trunks is a rarer (and possibly stronger) Saiyan than Broly
In fact, there are currently two Legendary Super Saiyans in the current Dragon Ball Super continuity. However, as Vegeta pointed out, there hasn’t been any known case of a Saiyan being born with a head color other than black, making Trunks the rarest Saiyan in Dragon Ball, not Broly. While Broly is one of the most famous Saiyans in Dragon Ball history due to his rare status as a Legendary Super Saiyan, he’s actually not the rarest type of Saiyan out there, since Vegeta confirms that that honor goes to his own son, Trunks.
Broly was introduced in the Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan movie and later appeared in two subsequent movies and a Dragon Ball Super: Broly reboot movie. While Broly’s first appearances weren’t officially canon within the larger Dragon Ball universe, the Dragon Ball Super movie is reported to be canon, meaning that Broly officially exists alongside Goku, Vegeta, and the other Z Fighters. Broly is what is known as a Legendary Super Saiyan, which is a Saiyan that is inherently more powerful than all others, even without any training. It is said that a Legendary Super Saiyan emerges every thousand years, which makes this type of Saiyan extremely rare, although apparently not as rare as Trunks.
