Final fantasy x has some of the most memorable characters in the entire franchise, and that of course includes its protagonist, Tidus. It sounds difficult to imagine this hero with some other design or profession than the one we saw in the final product, but yes, at some point it was like that. In fact, it was revealed that he was originally going to be a… plumber?
During a recent interview for Famitsu, Tetsuya nomura, character designer, and Kazushige Nojima, writer, released several interesting details about some initial concepts of this adventure.
“To make Tidus submerged, our initial plan was to make Tidus an underwater plumber. Several illustrations were even made of Tidus as a plumber, but he was eventually changed to be a Blitzball player. Blitzball is a water sport within the game, so this was our way of making Tidus swim without having to fix pipes. “
Yoshinori Kitase, producer of the game, was responsible for converting Tidus in an athlete. One of his biggest inspirations for this was his love for science fiction movies that have some sport within them. They also wanted Tidus had a unique identity among the other protagonists of Final Fantasy.
