Sporting Cristal It didn’t close last Sunday night as I expected. A tough result in Cusco left them with few opportunities to fight for the Betsson League 1 Clausura Tournament title, after losing 1-0 to Cienciano 1-0. The reasons? For Tiago Nunesthere were many factors that influenced the match not to take place as they worked on it, although that does not diminish their responsibility for the result.
In a press conference, the Brazilian strategist stated: “It is difficult at this moment to see the exact factor that has influenced the team not playing well. But all teams suffer here, we are talking about height, specifically today, we generated goal situations like Cienciano, we had the difficulty of controlling the transitions but we did not have defensive balance and in the end a goal that could have been avoided”.
He also added that “I believe that the situation of our difficulties at the end of the tournament does not involve today or the defeat in Cusco. It happened with games against Sport Boys, UTC, games that we played to win and we did not have clarity to score the goals.”. With this result, now the Rimenses will have to depend on other games to know if they win the Clausura title or not.
Regarding how the team has fared throughout the season, Nunes specified that his objective was the growth of the players. “I have to focus on improving this team, the person most responsible is me. We have to leave a good impression for our people”, he explained to the media.
Finally, he made an analysis of how the match against ‘Dad’ went: “We needed to write down the situations we had, control the transitions better, we are the team with the most possession but you can’t make so many mistakes in the passes, you have to be fine to be able to do it, otherwise situations will be generated for the rival as happened. In the second half we had more opportunities, goals were disallowed due to off-fire, we needed to be effective and more organized to defend”.
Sporting Cristal finished date 18 of the Clausura with 33 points and in fourth place in the table, while in Accumulated it has 68 points and is in third place. With these numbers, all that remains is to hope that Universitario, Melgar and Alianza Lima lose their last games in order to win the tournament and, thus, occupy second place in the Accumulated. Only in this scenario could they compete in a direct final against the intimates.
