Lawyers for Sam Bankman-Fried say three men drove their car into a metal barricade outside his parents’ house, where he is under house arrest.
In a brief filed in federal court, Lawyers for the former FTX CEO say the three men got out of the car after it hit the barricade and told a security guard guarding the house: “You won’t be able to stop us.”
The unidentified trio were then able to flee before security guards could search the car’s license plate.
According to a Reuters report, the incident was described in a January 19 court filing that was said to underscore the security risks faced by the FTX founder and people associated with him, including the two people who secured the $250 bail Bankman-Fried million:
“Given the high profile of this case and the extraordinary media attention it is receiving, it is reasonable to assume that non-parent guarantors will also face significant privacy and security issues if their identities are revealed.”
The lawyers did not specify the date or time they say the incident occurred.
On January 12, lawyers representing some of the largest English-language media -including Bloomberg, CNBC, Reuters and Financial Times- wrote a letter to US District Court Judge Lewis Kaplan requesting the names of the bondsmen.
Lawyers for the media argued that the public’s right to know Bankman-Fried’s guarantors outweighed their rights to privacy and security.
Since Bankman-Fried maintains close ties to some of the richest and most politically connected people on the planet, the lawyers argued that such non-disclosure could undermine public confidence in US government institutions.
Bankman-Fried was extradited to the United States in December and on January 3 pleaded not guilty to eight counts of fraud and conspiracy against him.
All charges are related to his alleged involvement in the catastrophic bankruptcy of FTX in November. The controversial character remains under house arrest at his parents’ home in California until his trial date, set for October 2.
