The Oscar winner joaquin phoenix (joker) and Academy Award-nominated actress Rooney Mara (carol) are already preparing their next film collaboration. On this occasion, the Hollywood couple will star in a period thriller that is provisionally titled The Island. The film is inspired by real events and will be directed by the Polish Pawel PawlikowskiOscar winner for Best Foreign Film for Going (2013) and laureate at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival for his intimate drama Cold War.
According to dead line, The Island will tell the story of an American couple who, in the 1930s, decide to turn their backs on civilization and build their own paradise home on a desert island. However, the lovers eventually make headlines in the tabloid newspapers. Later they must deal with a self-styled countess who intends to take over her land and build a luxury hotel. Thus begins “a psychological war as seduction and jealousy turn into sexual infidelity, betrayal and, finally, murder”, in the words of the medium.

In addition to directing, Pawlikowski is responsible for the script for this project. In the production are Tanya Seghatchian Y John Woodwardwhose previous credits include Cold War and the equally acclaimed the power of the dog (2021) by director Jane Campion. co-produces Ewa Puszczynska (Going), while Reindeer Antoniades (under the skin) serves as executive producer.

The Island It will be the fourth fictional film in which Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara work together. They previously shared screen on She (2013), by Spike Jonze; Don’t worry, it won’t go far (2018), by Gus Van Sant, and Maria Magdalena (2018), by Garth Davis.
Separately, Mara comes from acting in the alley of lost souls (2021), by Guillermo del Toro; and we will see her soon in the drama The kitchen directed by the Mexican Alonso Ruizpalacios. It is planned that The Island start filming in 2023. At the moment, it lacks a tentative release date.
