The characteristic style of the Dragon Ball characters (and the settings in general), despite its changes in recent years, has remained somewhat static. So much so that some of the characters from the first story arcs were noted for their animation quality. This means that Toei Animation has done a great job with its anime adaptation.
The success of Dragon Ball
And the success of the franchise has not come by itself. This work by Akira Toriyama, published in Shonen Jump magazine, in 1984 for the first time, has sold more than 160 million copies in Japan and 200 million in the rest of the world. Therefore, it is considered one of Shueisha’s most successful titles. So Toei Animation was tasked with turning the Dragon Ball adaptation into an equally remarkable design, which, in fact, achieved a record 1.7 million viewers on Cartoon Network in the US alone.
Of course, the plot that follows the adventures of Goku (a saiyan warrior), whose destiny is to protect the earth from other beings that pose a threat, has also had a lot to do with the immense popularity of the series. But the truth is that among the audience, those who have not followed her closely can identify the Dragon Ball characters for many reasons. Very surely the first one is that they recognize them in their super Saiyan form by their characteristic bristly yellow hair, among a cloud of bright tones that surrounds them. And, among all the variants, the saiyan, like any race, share very specific traits.
Now, since the first releases of Dragon Ball, the series has also been evolving, not only by introducing new characters and alternate stories, but throughout the saga we have seen more updated aspects of the characters. To contextualize, in strict order we would find them like this: Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT, Dragon Ball Z Kai and Dragon Ball Super.
Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero revived Gohan’s story
But, thanks to the international success that the franchise has so far, it has also released more than fifteen animated films that are set in the main events of Dragon Ball (although most are not within the official canon). Among them, the recent premiere of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero has unleashed a wave of feelings from the audience, assuming the return of the anime.
Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero decided to bet on the stories of Gohan and Piccolo, instead of the well-known saiyan team. Of course, this feature film promised to bring some new facts for the fans. And, truth be told, deliver on its promise, as it exceeded expectations.
So, speaking of the events of the movie, now, Gohan’s new form is flooding the internet thanks to an artist and his 90’s makeover. The illustration was published on the Instagram account by its creator Save Point Retro Gaming (save point), which you can see in the following image. In this scenario, Gohan’s new Ultimate form has been given a classic look that suits him perfectly:
As you have already seen, the appearance of Goku’s son is somewhat different from what we are used to seeing, since the artist combined it between red and white tones. In fact, the hero’s conventional Ultimate form has shades of white that extend to his eyebrows. As for his eyes, Gohan has a hint of red in his eyes, plus his forehead is much more prominent. But the state we see him in is not a Super Saiyan form, even if the colors give the impression that it is. In fact, Dragon Ball Super has made it very clear that this kind of transformation comes from the Ultimate Gohan as a base..
Of course, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero has catapulted Gohan into one of the best stages of his life as a hero and his image corresponds to the power that the franchise has given him; but ultimately, this 2D render represents it just as well. Perhaps it would be worth wondering if after these events, Gohan will continue to use the power increase. And, since the film is part of the canon, we will most likely continue to see some official changes in the hero.
