200 rooms and an environment that does not invite you to stay inside the suite, however beautiful it may be. The Madrid Edition joins the list of hotels in the capital and does so with a contemporary and design proposal that bets on gastronomy and style treated almost like a piece of art, something that they do in all their hotels.
IanSchrager, creator of Studio54It is behind the “The Edition”, a hotel brand created together with Marriott which has hotels in Abu Dhabi, Shanghai, London, Barcelona, New York or Turkey, where we find The Bodrum EDITION, a five-star hotel that they have in Turkey, in Yalikavak Bay and with views of the Turquoise Coast. Its most recent opening is the one in Madrid, which is an ode to the design that we love.
How is the Madrid Edition
In the Plaza de las Descalzas, the hotel stands on what was the headquarters of the Monte de Piedad. The hotel has been designed by British architect John Pawson and François Champsaur, an artist based in Paris.
The exterior of the building is characterized by its modern and clean lines that contrast with the 18th century baroque portico that is the side entrance that leads to one of the hotel’s restaurants, Jerónimo. Designed by Pedro de Ribera, this porch used to belong to a nearby building and now it is the first surprise we come across before even entering.
From the main door of the hotel we reach the iconic staircase that all the hotels in the chain have in common. In the case of Madrid, it is made of plaster and has 23 steps that rotate in a spiral lined with beige marble.
This staircase leads to the lobby, a spectacular room with undulating ceilings that is the nerve center of the hotel. With sofas and armchairs by Jean Michel Frank, recycled bronze stools by Maison Intègre, and rope chairs by Christian Astuguevieille, the lobby’s most striking feature is his pool table designed by Emmanuel Levet Stenne from a single piece white marble.
On the lower floor, a spa without water but defined by the hotel as “a cozy and intimate space clad in dark wood and adorned with old baroque chandeliers.” We can give ourselves mud baths and massages, among other treatments.
The rooms of “Madrid The Edition”
The rooms, 177 rooms, 21 suites and two Penthouse suites, all of which feature custom-made plaster headboards, whose shape mimics that of the baroque portico at the side entrance. The views overlook the Royal Palace, the Almudena Cathedral and to the Gran Vía depending on the room.
One detail that we loved is that no single-use plastics in rooms and the keys to the rooms are made of wood.
It is not necessary to stay at the hotel to enjoy its gastronomy. Besides of signature cocktail bar, called the Punch Roomand the Sky Bar with terrace on the rooftop (it has an outdoor swimming pool in which August in Madrid will be a “yes, I do”), it has two restaurants led by chefs Enrique Olvera and Diego Muñoz.
Jeronimo, the Mexican canteen
Enrique Olvera is the chef who runs this restaurant where we meet Mexico without leaving Madrid. It is accessed through the baroque portico and it’s an explosion of colors in textiles that is finished off with a Dorfer green stone bar and a space finished in oak.
Oroya, the Japanese Asian restaurant
Directed by the Peruvian chef Diego Muñoz and located on the roof of the hotel This restaurant mixes steel structures with climbing plants, glass panels and a relaxed proposal full of flavor. Especially suitable for sharing, its menu is full of influences that travel from Spain to Japan through Africa, Italy or Peru.
