Details emerged about the appearance of Guillermo del Toro in Barry! The third episode of the fourth and final season of the acclaimed HBO series features the Guadalajara director responsible for pinocchio (2022) and The Pan’s Labyrinth (2006). But how did you get him to join the project?
Guillermo del Toro has a brief cameo as a mysterious crime boss named “Toro” who offers his men NoHo Hank and Cristobal to kill Barry. During an interview with Deadlinethe co-creator and protagonist of Show, Bill Hader, revealed the process to make the surprising role that the filmmaker has in the episode broadcast this Sunday come true. According to Hader, the creative turned guest star was the one who asked to be on the series.
“He actually said, ‘I’d love to be on your show,’ and I was like, ‘Oh yeah.’ So, I wrote a paper for him and I said, ‘Hey, man. I wrote a paper for you. The character is called Toro’. And I think he was a little surprised. He said: ‘Really?’ And me: ‘Yes!’ And he texted me back: ‘Are you serious?’ And I told him: ‘Yes, you asked me. I did it’. And he was like, ‘Oh, well, when do you shoot? When is?'”
And I add:
“She got really excited, and the next thing I remember, Tiffany [Hasbourne], our costume designer, came up to me and said: ‘Guillermo has his own cane.’ And she showed me photos. ‘This is the suit he prefers’, and that was the one we chose. And I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, there he is.’ She went to a test and she did it. She was great”.

In addition, Bill Hader said that, leading up to filming, Del Toro and his wife, screenwriter Kim Morgan, were “really sweet.” On the other hand, the comedian stressed that the director is “very funny.”
“[Guillermo del Toro] he did a great job and brought his own walking stick which was great. He had two different versions of the character, and they were both really interesting. And he brought his wonderful wife Kim [Morgan] with him, and it was really sweet.”
At another point in the interview, Hader highlighted that the process to involve the Mexican in the filming was very joyful, since, due to their friendship, the presence of the co-writer of the books by The Strain on set was full of jokes. Jokes in which, by the way, Alfonso Cuarón also participated. He remembered it this way:
“It was bothering me a bit. He was like, ‘Are you really going to film it like this?’ I would answer: ‘Yes, I will’ And he: ‘Really? That’s all? Well…’ He was a lot of fun, and we’re all friends. I am a friend of his, and I am a friend of Alfonso Cuarón, and Alfonso would send me messages: ‘Guillermo says you don’t know how to direct.’ They were bothering me while filming with him. And I was like, ‘Oh my gosh. Guillermo told me: ‘I never said that. No no no. [Alfonso] he’s being an idiot’. But no, it was a lot of fun. I was really impressed with him.”
