Google gave a new news that can help inhabitants who are constantly seen affected by rains throughout the national territory. This is a new company tool that will work as an alert to prevent people affected by floods in vulnerable territories.
According to figures from the National Unit for Risk Management (UNGRD), 31% of the total area of Colombia is mostly prone to flooding and the department of Orinoquía is the region most prone to this condition.
Google explained that its new tool, which uses artificial intelligence, It is proposed as a way to prevent people who live near areas prone to flooding. During an Innovation and Artificial Intelligence event, the company explained that 18 countries will soon have this technology implemented and that includes 2 Latin American countries: Colombia and Brazil.
How will the tool work?
Google pointed out that this tool will have a system that will allow people who live in areas prone to overflows to be informed of waters with the intense rains that hit the country. The tool will issue alerts through smartphones, both systems Android as iOS.
Thus, when people in a location with a high probability of flooding search around them, they will be able to find the information in the Search tool and on Google Maps. For this objective, monitoring has already started with three rivers that are popular for overflowing: Cuenca Alto San Jorge (Antioquia), Cuenca Alto Putumayo (Putumayo) and Río Meta (Meta).
The company reported that the tool “seeks to provide access to trusted security information in times of crisis. The tool is part of Google’s Crisis Response Program, which supports prevention efforts and the work of the different institutions in the countries”. Similarly, the initiative offer interactive maps so that users can quickly access visual information with the exact location prone to flooding.
