The price of the Diamond of Drek-Thar card has given it a new value that not all players are willing to pay.
Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft is a popular online collectible card game. The developer of this free-to-play is Blizzard Entertainment. It was launched in 2014 and is currently free to download, with its respective purchases to facilitate the rate at which the cards are obtained and even to have access to extra content. However, the company has recently generated outrage and controversy among its fans because it is selling a card for $25 and, therefore, has earned it a series of criticisms.
Diamond cards, a treasure… for some.
To understand a little better, the foundation of Hearthstone is based on the lore of the popular Warcraft series, so since its launch it has positioned itself among one of the most popular games among Blizzard titles. And one of its main updates that has caught the attention of its users is the Diamond cards (introduced in the Forged in the Barren of Hearthstone expansion), which are actually “premium” versions of other cards. In fact, despite the fact that they have the same value as their similes (with respect to defense and attack), it is their appearance that has made them stand out compared to “normal” cards.
Initially, Diamond cards were only obtained by making certain purchases, such as expansions that included them, or by collecting all the legendary cards in some of the sets. Therefore, getting them became quite a complicated task for the players, since they could not be obtained by chance like the other cards. And little by little things became more complicated for collectors more interested in completing their objectives within the game.
While, in free-to-play terms, the Diamond cards have no impact other than their aesthetics because of the special animations, they turn out to be quite valuable because the edges of the cards have a unique touch that sets them apart from the rest, plus to be animated in 3D. But so far, there have been very mixed opinions regarding their functionality and the value placed on them within Hearthstone. However, this discussion has only increased after the last card, Drek’Thar Diamond, could only be obtained through a transaction of 3,000 gold coins, equivalent to 25 dollars.
Definitely, this situation is the one that triggered criticism from the gaming community, which accuses Blizzard of assigning a value comparable to real trading cards, in addition to not being willing to pay for them. As expected, they have also pointed out that its cost is half of the Elden ring, something that does not correspond to the value of each one. On the other hand, there have also been players who do not consider it a problem since this free online game gives the possibility of acquiring cards through purchases, but it does not limit the gaming experience at all, since it is only a stylized version of Drek’Thar than they could already get previously.
About the Drek’Thar card
For those who have already played free-to-play, you will know that the shaman and seer of the Frostwolf Drek’Thar clan of the Horde of Wow (who was also Thrall’s guardian) in his Diamond version has now become something of a treasure for some of the Hearthstone players. This legendary neutral minion card belongs to the “Fractired in Alterac Valley” set, but its Diamond version cannot be obtained like others. of its kind as mentioned above: buying the respective expansion or acquiring the entire collection. On the contrary, users who want to own it will have to use real money to buy it directly.
After Hearthstone incorporated the Core Set, the gaming experience has become more accessible. That is why players have the possibility to choose their own cards for free without this being a disadvantage against their opponents. In fact, the annual renewal allows the sets to adapt to the needs of the games and to try more competitive modes on the field. And precisely this movement was what Blizzard needed to bring the game closer to its fans. But with the updates to the Diamond cards we could perhaps expect payment methods to become more and more common within free-to-play; or be the prelude to much larger changes towards microtransactions within Hearthstone.
