You will likely have to change the cable on your iPhone in a few months.
In September the European Union will propose a regulation on mobile chargers where a direct proposal will be launched in which it will try to offer a common charger solution, something that will hurt Apple above all.
And it is that Apple could be forced to eliminate the lightning port of the iPhone in favor of USB-C according to this legislation that the European Commission will present in September, and that could prosper. According to a study commissioned by the European Commission, lightning connectors are found in 21% of telephones, and the remaining 79% are terminals that use the micro-USB or USB-C port.
The hypothetical legislation would establish a common charging port for all mobile phones in all European Union countries, and in view of the fact that Apple bets on this port in its terminals, it would be affected in the design of the next phones.
It is not the first time that the European Commission has tried it, because in 2018 it tried to make a final resolution on the subject, but it did not become law.
Apple admitted that forcing a common charging port in the industry affect innovation and create e-waste as consumers would be forced to switch to new cables.
There is a good chance that it will prosper, because already last year the European Parliament voted in favor of a common charger to try to alleviate the amount of waste that is thrown into the environment, as well as to facilitate user comfort.
This is just a proposal, and the Executive Power of the European Union is drafting the legislation that will be presented for discussion next September. Reuters.
