Of the total health GDP registered in the country in 2020, one fifth corresponds to hospital services, the segment with the highest percentage of spending, followed by outpatient medical services. Regarding the sectoral division, 38% of the value is attributed to the public sector, while the rest is divided between the private sector and unpaid work.
Access to health services
Beyond the expenditure made by the government or by private entities, the tangible result of said investment is reflected in the access of citizens to health services. In 2020, around three quarters of the Mexican population were affiliated with a health institution. The largest percentage was enrolled in the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), a federal government social security institution and one of the largest social security organizations in Latin America.
