Through a false eCommerce page, a family claims to have been scammed in the purchase of a screen.
The arrival of the pandemic, among all that it brought with it, boosted online sales like never before due to that long confinement that was experienced throughout the world.
Without a doubt, what has happened since March of last year, when the Covid-19 pandemic was decreed worldwide, is one of those events that have marked history forever, which is why it is sowing new habits and several significant changes. in society.
One of them, among a long list, is the adoption of a much broader digital life; If before we already lived in a hybrid world, now, after the arrival of the pandemic, this had a much greater acceleration and, although reluctantly for some, it was time to learn more than necessary to survive in an era where digital, more than a luxury, became a necessity.
Starting from this premise, society at a global level, accustomed to old consumption habits, adapted to something that had been making a lot of noise for several years, eCommerce, and that thanks to the effects derived from the presence of Covid-19 had great growth.
According to data from the consultancy Adobe, it is estimated that in 2021 alone, eCommerce grew by 20 percent, which, in figures, represents sales of 4.2 billion dollars.
Now, it should be noted that this so-called “age of digitization” has also brought with it a new series of scams towards consumers.
Such is the case of a family that, through an email addressed to Merca 2.0, reports that they have been scammed by a false eCommerce page, where they even use the logos of some brands to hook the consumer.
“On December 22, 2021, the screen in my house broke down and when I asked my 3 and 4-year-old children what they would ask the wise men, they told me that their screen and some carts. The truth is, we didn’t have the money at that time and on December 26 we asked a friend for a loan, so we decided to buy the screen.
We were seeing several offers, until due to my bad luck I came to a page that appears as such “offers on electrical appliances”. On the surface, the page looks legitimate, since when I open it, I immediately see the Chedraui logo and they offer devices with 40 percent and even 70 percent off. On the page there are telephone numbers and even the address of a store. The questions for the submission and the page all seemed very formal.
We chose a 60-inch Samsung screen, which from 12 thousand, was 6,500. When requesting information, they asked us for an email, phone number and to contact customer service via Messenger. When I asked how the payment and delivery would be, they told me that when making the deposit, we had to send the card, so that the package could begin to be prepared and sent; they would send us the guide to be able to track it by DHL, which would arrive in one or two days.
They asked me if the deposit would be in a bank or in OXXO and, due to the dates, the banks are super full, so we decided to go through OXXO, making the deposit to a BANAMEX account that they provided us at approximately 5 :30 p.m.
I made the deposit, I sent the cards and they told me that in a moment they would send me the guide. The whole day passed and we had no answer, the guide or any other message did not swim.
The next day I started looking for the data that appears in the publication, but they never responded; however, reviewing the comments, I could see that more people had already been victims of this scam and I immediately contacted the cyber police, they told me that I had to go to the Public Ministry to draw up the record but they asked me for a trace of the page of BANXICO where the deposits to the accounts appear.
I contacted OXXO to see if they could give me more information about the account and they told me that it was a BANAMEX balance account, the kind that counts $50.00. I asked a colleague to investigate this page further and he managed to get more information out of it. HSBC accounts of BANCOMER, BANAMEX and SANTANDER”.
Although it is true that internet or online purchases are part of current trends, for years they have become a real alternative for consumers; a more comfortable and even simple way to shop without the need to leave home.
On the other hand, buying in this mode has its risks, since it is very easy to fall for scams or even have our bank and personal data stolen.
