There are more and more cyber scams through hacking and ransomware attacks that affect millions of people around the world, therefore, in recent months the request of various authorities from different governments to urgently attack the terrible problem has intensified.
The statistics do not lie when they report that between 2020 and so far in 2023, reports of kidnapping of data from entities have grown scandalously to later encrypt them and demand a ransom to release them, in addition, cybercriminals also threaten to publish the information in case the payment is not made.
Given this, Argentina began a request that other countries in the region do not look with bad eyes since in recent days the Specialized Cybercrime Prosecutor Unit (UFECI) urged the Agency for Access to Public Information to evaluate the initiation of an investigation for possible inadequate treatment or protection of personal data, therefore, the prosecution proposes the creation of a protocol with recommendations for action in the face of attacks.
alert proposal
The alert proposal and request was generated due to a strong cyber attack on the National Securities Commission that was made public on June 11, when the Medusa ransomware group published among its victims the entity that regulates the markets in Argentina. Eight days later, the files were published on the dark web and, days later, on Telegram.
The prosecutor’s office described in a statement everything recorded since the attack occurred, on June 7 at 7:30 a.m., including the official statement of a “contained cyber attack” by the CNV. “We request an administrative investigation, to see if the CNV had adequately managed your information. We ask the Directorate for the Protection of Personal Data, which is the competent body in this matter, to move forward,” said prosecutor Horacio Azzolin.
If the request is approved, without a doubt this would be a great step and a paradigm shift with respect to the search for better protection against cyber attacks in South America and the rest of the continent.
