Three McDonald’s franchisees in the United States they were fined thousands of dollars for letting their underage employees work more hours than the law allows.
An investigation found employees under the age of 18 working illegally at 62 locations in Kentucky, Indiana, Maryland and Ohio.

McDonald’s franchisees responsible for these Golden Arches chain locations will have to pay more than $200,000 in fines.
According to the United States Department of Labor (DOL), the franchising firms Bauer Food LLC, Archways Richwood LLC and Bell Restaurant Group I LLC had more than 305 children working. The authorities indicated that one of the children was allowed to operate a fryer, a task prohibited for workers under 16 years of age.
The fines totaled $212,754, distributed as follows:
- Bauer Food LLC, owner of 10 locations, employed 24 workers under the age of 16, including the two children under the age of 10. He will pay a fine of $39,711.
- Archways Richwood LLC, which operates 27 McDonald’s restaurants, allowed 242 minors ages 14 to 15 to work beyond permitted hours. His fine was $143,566.
- Bell Restaurant Group I LLC employed 29 minors ages 14-15 beyond permitted hours. His penalty was for $29,267.
Tiffanie Boyd, senior vice president and chief people officer for McDonald’s USA, told CNN: “These reports are unacceptable, deeply concerning, and run counter to the high expectations we have for the entire McDonald’s brand… We are committed to ensuring our franchisees have the resources they need to promote safe workplaces for all employees and maintain compliance with all employment laws.”
