Although not as well known or loved as its NES iteration, Super Punch Out is praised for being a colorful and detailed game that offers quite a challenge. Originally released on the SNES in 1994, the player takes on the WVBA for the title of champion.
Similar to Punch-Out on the NES, players are pitted against a series of cartoonish national stereotypes of boxers from around the world. Y Super Punch Out was added to the NSO service of SNES, along with other SNES games. Additionally, a special Championship Edition was added earlier this year, in which all tracks and opponents would be available from the start.
Recently, discovered a cheat that is entered via a code in Super Punch-Out that unlocks a secret multiplayer mode that was undiscovered for nearly three decades. This one was discovered by Twitter user Unlisted Cheats, who specializes in finding secret cheats for a number of games.
In the case of Super Punch Out, found a series of secret codes that use the combinations of two buttons in the game. He points out that two of these codes are very well known, as they unlock Japanese name input and a sound check, respectively.
However, two more codes are revealed in his post, in which holding the Y and R buttons and then pressing the A or Home button will take players to a new menu. This allows players to select any character in the game and fight them in free 1v1 combat. The list of opponents even includes those that can be found in the Special Circuit.
Notes that in this mode you can access the multiplayer mode, in which the player needs a second controller. The inputs themselves will not work unless the player uses the second controller as well. Once the player has selected their opponent, they must hold down the B and Y buttons on the character info screen, then press A or Start on the first player’s controller.
Once this is done, the opponent’s CPU in Super Punch Out can be controlled by the second player. When gamers discovered the tweet, many went to try it out for themselves, with many confirming that these codes work even with the Nintendo Switch Online version.
Fans noted that the second player had access to the same moves as AI opponents, such as the ability to recover his health as Gabby Jay. Some theorize that this mode was probably for debugging purposes, or that the developers were working on a multiplayer mode before discarding it, but which was left in the final version.
