In the past week, ThermoFisher Scientific Inc.., a biotech company, announced that there are two diagnostic blood tests completely new to detect lupus and systemic sclerosis.
The US Food and Drug Administration has already approved them, but more specifically, the test EliA RibP.
This test can be used to identify lupus in patients who have negative antinuclear antibody tests.
This new test detects monospecific antibodies to ribosomal proteins P.
Antinuclear antibodies are a antibody that the body creates to attack its cells. This is why they are so common among people suffering from autoimmune disorders. Most of the people who suffer Lupus are positive for this parameter. There are a handful of people with lupus who don’t make antibodies. This is where EliA RibP can come in very handy.
Instead, this new test detects monospecific antibodies to ribosomal proteins P. These antibodies are found in a large number of patients with systemic lupus, making the test a valid diagnostic tool for these patients who have not been tested for antinuclear antibodies.
This test can only be used with a prescription in the United States, as it has been approved by the FDA.
The company has yet to clarify whether approval will be granted for European countries.
systemic lupus
One of the most common autoimmune diseases is systemic lupus. This disease is about systemic and chronic disordersThis means that almost every organ in your body can be affected. There are many manifestations of this condition, some with severe involvement.
Therefore, treatment focuses on keeping patients healthy and avoiding complications and symptoms. A diagnosis is crucial for this reason and because some treatments can have adverse side effects.
In Mexico, more women suffer from Lupus
Miguel Ángel Saavedra Salinas, an academic from the Postgraduate Studies Division of the Faculty of Medicine, explained that “The ratio of nine to one is seen in women of reproductive age; however, if you situate infantile lupus it is more open, two or three women for each man; and in the elderly (over 60 years old) there is also a closer relationship, one or two women for each man”
It is a autoimmune disease, because the cells dedicated to defending the body -which are known as the immune system- begin to attack healthy cells and tissues by mistake, especially damaging the kidneys, skin, joints, heart, blood vessels and the brain, Saavedra Salinas abounds.
The scholar points out thate the best trained specialists to treat lupus patients are rheumatologistsbut one of the main challenges they face is to prepare future doctors at the Faculty so that they can identify, at the first level of care, people with this condition.
Among the main symptoms that a person can present include weight loss, chronic fever (without infections), hair loss, excessive sensitivity to sunlight, pale skin, violaceous skin lesions, joint pain, chest pain, for example.
