Sony Pictures and The Walt Disney Company announced on Friday that they will develop a new Spider-Man movie together with the British actor Tom Holland as the protagonist, which implies a step backward in the split that both companies had had in August and allowing the Character follow in the billionaire Marvel Cinematic Universe (UCM).
This was confirmed by Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios – a subsidiary of the Mickey Mouse house – in a statement collected by the US media.
There it was also detailed that the third solo Spider-Man tape produced by Marvel and Feige and distributed by Sony will arrive on July 16, 2021, and that the character will also continue to make his appearances on the UCM tapes, as he did in the recent “Avengers: Endgame”.
“I am delighted that the journey of ‘Spidey’ continues in the Marvel Cinematic Universe,” said Feige, who added: “Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story spans all ages and audiences around the world. Plus, he’s the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as he continues to develop his own ‘Spider-Verse’ you never know what surprises the future holds. ”
For his part, the head of communications at Sony Pictures Entertainment, Robert Lawson, stated that the two companies had “a great collaboration in the last four years” and that although they had broken relationships in August there was always a “mutual desire to continue like the from many fans. ”
While Spider-Man is one of the most iconic characters in Marvel Comics, his film exploitation rights were sold in the late 1990s to Sony, long before Marvel Studios was acquired by Disney and Feige developed the franchise for Avengers movies.
As that series of interconnected films grew in fans and in box office – its 23 films have earned more than $ 22.5 billion so far – Marvel Studios became more interested in repatriating the spider character.
This was how in 2015 Sony and Disney reached an agreement through which Feige would produce the relaunch of the Spider-Man franchise alone, that Sony would take most of the benefits for those tapes and that the character could be included in other UCM movies.
In addition to his appearance in “Captain America: Civil War” (2016), “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018) and “Avengers: Endgame” (2019), Tom Holland donned the Spider-Man costume on the tapes alone. ” Spider-Man: Homecoming “(2017) and” Spider-Man: Far From Home “(2019).
Specialized reports last August claimed that the breakup had occurred precisely because the pact signed in 2015 stipulated that those two tapes, which earned more than $ 2 billion at the box office, only contributed to the Disney-owned company a fraction of the earnings.
While the details of the new deal have yet to be released, the media presume that Sony may have agreed to improve benefits for Disney/Marvel.
