According to information from the Government of Mexico, for 18 years there was a drop in the minimum wage compared to countries like China.
President AMLO stated that during that time the minimum wage was not raised for fear of rising inflation.
He argued that the result of inflation in Mexico during his term was due to the war between Ukraine and Russia, not to the increase in the minimum wage.
Today, during the press conference “La Mañanera”, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) shared how during the 18 years there has been a drop in the minimum wage in Mexico, compared to countries like China.
He also pointed out that the blow from inflation has not been the product of the increase in the minimum wage, but rather due to the War between Ukraine and Russia.
This is how inflation in energy has been compared:
They compare the fall in wages in Mexico after 18 years of government
The President of Mexico shared a graph where he showed salary growth in China and Mexico over 18 years. In it, he showed how, while China’s economy has been progressively advancing, Mexico’s has been declining. From an initial 50 dollars, the salary increased in 2018 to 250, while in Mexico, which started at 100, it has fluctuated, experiencing falls and increases since 2000.
“When the boom began in China, because here there are growth rates in China of 12, 14 percent per year, it was also said about the lies that China’s comparative advantage was in low wages, that’s why it was becoming the factory of the world. But look at the behavior from 2000 to 2018. They and their salary are increasing. And in Mexico we are staying”.
AMLO pointed out that in recent times, Mexico’s economy has been lagging behind with respect to the Asian country. After that, he showed a broken down graph of the behavior of the minimum wage during each year. He highlighted that part of the conservative ideology was the one that shared the “false” message of not increasing the minimum wage due to the inflationary threat: “we increased the minimum wage and inflation did not come,” he said after his point.
According to the president’s words, it was due to the War between Russia and Ukraine that inflation began to hit the country, arguing that it was a global effect, not a product of the salary increase. On the contrary, López Obrador defended that this measure has earned him the option of anticipating a consumer crisis, something that gives “peace” to his mandate, he declared.
Finally, when touching on the issue of energy, he commented how inflation in Mexico was always higher than that of the United States, arguing that this is due to the subsidy.
“In general, inflation in Mexico was always higher than that of the United States, but with a fair proportion. And inflation in the United States came to be above ours. But they have already taken measures, especially in energy management. This was lowered because the technocrats, with all due respect neoliberals, have a hard time accepting that the subsidy is necessary, not in a general way, but when it comes to protecting the popular economy. For example, the increase in the price of gasoline and they had it out of control and it went up. We have control of 0.3 because the price of gasoline has not risen”.
