The producers of the Criptovisión television program made a documentary called “Volcanic Gold”, in which they show Bitcoin mining in El Salvador, with renewable energy. Cointelegraph en Español spoke with Iñaki Apezteguía and Martín Ferratto, who developed this idea, to find out more details.
“We made the documentary because the opportunity arose to be the first Latin American media team that could access the Berlin Geothermal Power Plant, and see firsthand what the Bitcoin mining process was like, using geothermal energy from a volcano. Although there is a precedent in Iceland, where it is being done in the same way”, Iñaki Apezteguía explained.
“This is the first Latin American experience, and it is still being done on a small scale, with some 300 Asics Miners in operation. Allocating one mega of the power of the plant to the mining of the plant. They are still fine-tuning it though,” he added.
On the other hand, Martín Ferratto commented: “For us it was an incredible experience to be able to participate in a process that does not have many precedents at an international level. And it allowed us to get to know up close how this experience is turning out.”
And he added: “We wanted to make this documentary so that people, not only from the crypto ecosystem, can learn about this. And see how effectively bitcoin mining also breaks that myth of unnecessary energy wear or energy waste. Because it is made with renewable energy”.
“Here there is no waste of energy and it is a clear way to show that Bitcoin is a sustainable technology and that allows the use of sources that are currently being underutilized or that are not even used at all. Bitcoin sometimes gets punished a lot. But, if we had more renewable sources, the myth of the energy waste of the Bitcoin network would be broken”, concluded Apezteguía.
