“I have been in soccer for almost 30 years and it is the first time I have seen a player sent off for making the gesture of clapping (in the case of Cabanillas). That definitely makes you suspicious of how the game was already presented ”, declared the cream top manager upon his arrival in Lima at the Jorge Chávez Airport. “It can’t be that because of the kick to Ureña, he first took the yellow card (to Aldair Perleche) and then showed him the red one; They did not charge us a penalty when we were two less; he expels Corzo and not the other boy (Piero Serra); the entrance against Bolívar and that later triggers their goal (the goal by José Manzaneda). There were several situations that leave us very concerned about what is happening with the referees in Peruvian soccer ”he added.
It is for all this that Universitario, announced Ferrari, has sent a letter to Conar (National Referee Commission), with a copy to the Peruvian Football Federation (FPF), requesting that from now on the duels of the ‘U’ have a shortlist of foreign referees. “Today we are willing to stop paying for some things to be able to cover this topic. We are fighting for the championship and the way things turned out makes us suspicious and concerned. We get tired of sending letters and making announcements because they don’t do anything”the manager continued.
According to RPP, the student group would have to spend more than 10,000 dollars per match to bring an international arbitration shortlist. “Regarding a possible request for foreign referees in League 1: fees for the foursome plus referee advisor is approximately $11,000 per game. The club that makes the request will have to assume the economic. The amount does not include tickets or lodging. The reference of the amount is similar to what the referees receive when they direct Conmebol tournaments ”, indicated the medium. Whatever the cost, Ferrari has already said it is willing to take it.
The historical referents speak
At Depor we contacted important former players of the club to find out their opinions on what happened in Piura and if they agree with the position that Universitario has taken on requiring a shortlist of foreigners. “For me the performance of the referee was very bad and influenced the result in any way”he told us German Leguiaa historic midfielder for the cream squad and champion with the team on two occasions (1982 and 1990). “Before starting to expel, their decisions were already terrible. He didn’t let them play and the ‘U’ is a team that plays, he cut the players a lot. And then came the expulsions. That was already the cherry. The criminal did not charge it either. In itself, a lousy arbitration ”. added.
He also pointed out that Conar should do something, because “They have to realize that they are looking bad”. Let’s remember that César Vallejo and Sporting Cristal have also claimed, a few days ago, for the performance of the judges. “This referee (Menéndez) has to be punished. If he isn’t punished, then it would already look bad. Just as a player is punished, the referee has to be punished with three or four dates to see if he does not do the same again ”says Leguía.
The champion with Universitario also said that “Bringing referees from outside is a bit heavy here because of the places and areas where they play”but what would it be “a pressure for the referees” nationals. “If they don’t do anything and if they are going to continue like this, they are going to ruin the championship. And not only are they going to ruin the championship, they’re going to ruin football, the show. People want to watch football. But if all this happens, he doesn’t watch football and everyone starts talking. The fans today are saying everything. So, he is spoiling the championship “delimits.
rainer torres, champion with the ‘U’ twice (2009 and 2013) and member of Embajadur Crema, also criticized Menéndez’s performance. He pointed out that from the beginning the referee was already making mistakes against the cream team and that, later, the red card to Cabanillas was felt that it was more for compensation than for anything else (he had previously sent off the local Aldair Perleche). “I think he started looking for anything. And, well, there was an action, suddenly wrong, by Cabanillas, but it definitely wasn’t for red, a yellow would have been enough. And, well, then the red ones came. I think that he had already gotten out of hand, he had already made too many mistakes. He could have handled it differently.”he added.
Regarding the international shortlist, Torres specified that it is not a long-term solution: “If the ‘U’ has the necessary economy for that… well, I understand that the club itself has to pay for that. However, it is something that will not be able to do all the dates. So, the issue is trying to help so that these arbitrations (the bad ones) don’t happen anymore in Peruvian soccer. It is something that has been going on for a long time and it is a conversation that has to be handled directly with Conar so that they assume responsibility and these arbitration errors are not so big, because in the end they harm the important moments within a championship, in which the first place in closeness is being disputed. Bringing an arbitration shortlist from abroad helps you solve an immediate problem, but it is not something you can maintain in the long run”.
Of course, the exvolante merengue indicated that in “The subject of the referees, there are some who are punctually wrong” and what do you think “That out there you should ask that certain referees no longer referee you (University)”. “I think that who they are is very marked and that their handling within the game is too many errors against the ‘U’. It goes around to resolve the immediate issue above all, but, in the long run, I think that you do have to have a meeting with Conar and that they try to handle it in a different way, because arbitration errors are happening, but they always happen against the same teams or in favor of the same teams”he concluded.
For now, the president of the FPF, Agustín Lozano, will meet tomorrow with Conar to discuss the issue of arbitration complaints, since Universitario is not the only team that has complained. Vallejo, Cristal and ADT have also done it. As Depor has learned, there will be changes regarding this issue.
The VAR: the solution?
Faced with the mistakes that certain referees are making, some fans, players, former players or managers can hope for the arrival of VAR for the Clausura. Germán Leguía, for example, points out that “it will be good” for the Peruvian championship, while Rainer Torres supports him. “Definitely, I am convinced that he is going to help. Naturally, it will not solve the general problem, but it will be an important help for the referees, for the teams, also so that this type of problem (referee errors) does not happen”, says Torres.
Jean Ferrari, however, does not have faith in him. “I don’t think VAR is an immediate solution, because in the end: who are going to manage it? This is a wheel. Our immediate measure is to request a foreign shortlist and from that there are structural changes. I hope the FPF meets with Conar. Last year mistakes were not made as rude as today. (…) Here we are not complaining against an arbitrator, but we are talking about a request: we need a foreign shortlist to come because we are not satisfied with the arbitration that we are having. After what happened in Sullana, it has been shown that the only way for them to beat us is to expel us players”he concluded.
