The industry is expected to grow to $350 billion by 2027.
Latin America is the leading region, where 80% of Mexicans have a pet.
The pet industry continues to grow around the world, where more and more brands are joining this ecosystem of products such as pet food. Now, the Federal Consumer Attorney’s Office (Profeco) revealed which are the worst dog croquettes currently on the market.
According to data from Mordor Intelligence, the Mexico pet food market is projected to register a CAGR of 5.4 percent during the forecast period of 2022-2027.
The same source mentions that the canine segment dominates the market and according to the National Association of Balanced Animal Feeding (CONAFAB), the canine population in 2018 was 17.1 million, compared to the feline population of 6.6 million.
Mordor Intelligence indicates that already expanding online pet food sales increased fast enough in 2020, as the pandemic urged consumers to stay home. They reveal that Petco and Maskota are the largest pet food chains in Mexico. However, some online platforms, such as Amazon and Mercado Libre, are shaping the market on a larger scale.
The worst dog food on the market
Pets are increasingly important in homes around the world, which is why dog owners are increasingly aware of their diet and the brands that are on the market.
For this reason, in the Consumer Magazine of the month of July, the Federal Consumer Attorney’s Office (Profeco) prepared a study among 46 brands of different meat components, as well as different prices.
According to the consumer attorney, Ricardo Sheffield, he explained that all “the croquettes are based on US standards, since in Mexico there is currently no standard for these products.”
Likewise, the study reported that most brands meet this quality standard.
The study mentioned that the only exception was the Keprecio brand, which is the only one that does not meet the recommendations and is below the level recommended by the American Association of Food Control Officials (AAFCO).
“If you want to take care of your dog, that’s not the right one,” said the attorney in the investigation.
Likewise, the attorney general’s office found that there are croquettes, that their flour is made of pure meat and others of viscera and bones.
They explain that in the country, since they do not have a standard to which they are tied, the brands put phrases on their packaging that they cannot verify. They give as an example “brands like Natdog that seem to have chicken breast, due to the illustrative image, but it is chicken meal, and it also says on its packaging that its chicken flavor is irresistible. O Beneful de Purina, whose phrase is radiant health”.
“There are a lot of lying phrases that cannot be verified (…) They abuse because there are no rules,” he asserted.
Ricardo Sheffield added that there is a product reviewed by the market that was giving less and for this reason it could leave the market and it is the Respet brand that declares 4 kilos and is 3.9 kilos.
It is not the first time that Profeco launches a study of brands that meet the elements to be a suitable product for consumption.
