The former Attorney General of the Republic, Jesus Murillo Karam, imprisoned since August 2022 for the irregularities with which the investigation into the disappearance -in 2014- of the 43 normalistas from Ayotzinapa, He will face a new criminal process in which he is accused of forced disappearance and torture, crimes allegedly committed against a man accused of being a hitman for the Guerreros Unidos gang.
The control judge Felipe de Jesus Delgadillo Padierna decided over the weekend to dictate to the former official two new orders linking the process, because he allegedly tortured Felipe Rodriguez Salgadoalias “El Cepillo”, who was initially arrested for participating in the disappearance and homicide of normal school students, although he is now free.
After several interruptions, due to the ex-prosecutor’s precarious state of health, in a hearing that lasted 10 hours, the federal Public Ministry accused Murillo Karam of the new crimes, and specifically accused him of being part of a criminal enterprise that allowed the creation of the so-called “historical truth” of the events that occurred between September 26 and 27, 2014, in which the 43 students of the normal Isidro Burgos de Ayotzinapa, in the state of Guerrero, disappeared.
Jesús Murillo Karam, 75, is already facing criminal proceedings for crimes against the administration of justice, forced disappearance and torture, to which is added the new accusation for the forced disappearance and torture of Felipe Rodríguez Salgado.
The alleged forced disappearance of the latter would only have taken place temporarily, since when he was arrested in January 2015, he was missing for just over four hours. In other words, the agents in charge of his apprehension did not immediately refer him to the Public Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Office of the Special Prosecutor for Organized Crime Investigation.
The current Attorney General’s Office (FGR) presumes that in those four hours “El Cepillo” was interrogated and tortured. In these last facts, the subject was forced to confess that he had participated in the disappearance and homicide of the normalistas, crimes for which he faced criminal proceedings, although after proving that he suffered torture, and for lack of evidence, the First Collegiate Court of the state from Tamaulipas ordered his release at the end of 2018.
The new accusation against Murillo Karam is based on several medical reports that detailed that Felipe Rodríguez Salgado had 31 injuries on his body, all caused after his arrest.
According to the investigation by the PGR, “El Cepillo” would have been one of the hit men who deprived the normalistas of their lives, to later order the disappearance of the bodies. In that investigation, facts were hidden and invented, evidence disappeared, and dozens of defendants tortured, in order to reach a conclusion that does not adhere to what really happened with the students, according to the current Attorney General of the Republic. .
If found responsible when his two criminal proceedings are concluded, Jesús Murillo Karam could be sentenced to between 10 and 60 years in prison for each of the crimes of torture and forced disappearance.
