- Despite the lockdown due to the pandemic, there has been a considerable increase in sexually transmitted infections in Mexico.
- At present, there are already diagnostic devices of the highest precision that serve so that patients can have an accurate diagnosis and adequate follow-up to treat the disease.
- By identifying problems in a timely manner, it is possible to avoid their evolution in high-risk situations.
According to figures from the Epidemiological Bulletin of the National Epidemiological Surveillance System of the Ministry of Health, during 2021 there were considerable increases in cases of sexually transmitted infections in Mexico relative to previous years. From the report, four diseases were identified in which the increase was quite noticeable: acquired syphilis, chancroid, genital herpes and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
Despite the situation of confinement caused by the pandemic, these figures are an alarm signal and indicate the importance of promoting prevention and adequate sexual health.
“Sexual health is an issue that should concern us all and in which health institutions should take action on the matter. This begins, of course, with the right education at the right ages; however, it is necessary that there is a culture of diagnosis, care, prevention and early care without prejudice and with the help of instruments of the highest quality and precision that, in addition to an accurate diagnosis, serve as tools that help follow up in each case. ”, explains Dr. Roberto Santos, medical director of Kabla.
Current clinical technology is efficient, reliable, and highly accurate in identifying the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections in patients. The objective is to detect diseases as soon as possible to initiate the appropriate treatment and avoid major consequences.
The most common sexually transmitted infections in Mexico
acquired syphilis
There are currently more than 10,500 active cases of acquired syphilis in Mexico. These figures imply annual growth of 98% in the prevalence of the disease in relation to previous years. However, it is a disease that can be easily detected with a blood test or a rapid test for the qualitative detection of antibodies. Both are easy to obtain and offer reliable results in a matter of hours.
soft chancre
The soft chancre or chancroid is a disease caused by a bacterium, which appears as a lesion in the genital areas. After an incubation period it transforms into an ulcer. It can be painful, uncomfortable, and constantly discharge pus. Its diagnosis is given after analyzing a sample of the lesion to look for the bacteria that produces them.
Genital herpes
In Mexico there are more than 7,000 active cases of genital herpes and it is a disease that is easily and quickly transmitted. It can be easily diagnosed and identified with highly reliable PCR tests that provide fast results.
HIV
According to records of Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDSIn the world, more than 37 million people live with the human immunodeficiency virus. The figures for Mexico exceed 13,000 cases among the population. It can be detected with the Antibody Test, a rapid, continuous-flow, single-use, in vitro, qualitative immunoassay for the detection of antibodies in blood. In less than a minute it can deliver results with greater than 99.6% accuracy.
