- Ergonomic footwear stands out for being comfortable on the inside and strong on the outside to provide comfort in the long hours of health professionals.
- It also has no laces and is made of materials that do not accumulate viruses, fungi and bacteria because they are the usual pathogens in hospitals.
- The project was shortlisted for the prestigious Designers Australia Awards 2022.
Thanks to technology, important innovations have been developed that make everyday life easier. The term “smart” is applied in aspects such as telephones and computers but now it has reached a new field. It’s all thanks to the first smart shoes for doctors in history.
In this case, you know better than anyone the importance of footwear to meet the workday. In fact, from the student stage it is a fundamental requirement because it is part of the standard that all aspiring health professionals must adhere to.
Life inside hospitals
The problem is that many times these pieces do not fulfill the function of adequately protecting the feet. Although they look nice and clean on the outside, inside they lack comfort and the only thing that cause is that the extremities end up worn.
On the other hand, there is often a misconception that doctors just sit in their offices all the time. Actually it is not like that and some time ago a doctor did an interesting experiment. With the help of a smartwatch, he kept track of the distance a resident walked during a 24-hour shift.
As a result of the above, he obtained that he gave a total of 17 thousand 577 steps. This is equivalent to traveling 14.5 kilometers. In turn, he burned 3,492 calories, which is equal to an intense physical exercise routine in any gym.
However, with the aim of making the days inside the hospitals more comfortable, the first smart shoes exclusively for doctors. It is a work led by the Monash University and the Blundstone Institute of Australia.
Make the days of health workers more comfortable
For the development of this important innovation, the work of doctors and nurses was closely followed. They were followed up to identify the main problems they face with respect to their daily lives and which often begin with the fact of the inconvenience they have when walking.
The result is a small ergonomic boot that is comfortable on the inside. As part of its features, it classifies different tasks performed throughout a work shift and can identify different postures, changes in gait and the lifting of heavy loads. Based on these data, it exerts greater pressure on certain areas of the foot to avoid posture problems.
Dr. Rowan Page of the Monash Health Design Collab, who was at the forefront of the work, says technology was used to capture insights into the daily challenges faced by his colleagues. While machine learning techniques were used to realize this important innovation.
“We have integrated a sensor system that analyzes various parts of the foot to provide real-time feedback through a smartphone app that detects abnormalities and highlights potential problems.”
On the other hand, while smart shoes for doctors are comfortable on the inside, on the inside they stand out for their strength to withstand all the challenges of a working day. They also have no laces and are made of materials that do not accumulate viruses, fungi and bacteria because they are the usual pathogens in hospitals.
Thanks to its innovative design and revolutionary idea, this project was shortlisted to participate in the prestigious awards Designers Australia Awards 2022. While marketing could start soon.
