OnlyFans is an online platform and app created in 2016.
The platform registers one million active creators in the world.
The United States is the country with the largest number of Internet users.
The digital world continues to grow every day with the arrival of new platforms and users. One of them is OnlyFans, the adult content application that has gained greater fame in recent months and where there is a large number of registered people, but that according to specialists does not distance it from the possible cyber risks that can be suffered if it is not used well.
For those who do not know it, OnlyFans is one of the star digital platforms, since it is a social network exclusively for adults in which content creators share erotic or sexual images and videos of all types and categories and It already registers a million active creators around the world.
A study conducted by Semrush detailed that in January 2022, users from the United States accumulated approximately 248 million visits to the OnlyFans content creators website, becoming the country with the largest number of registered people; it was followed by the United Kingdom, with 23.5 million visits to the photo and video sharing platform; while users from Canada and the Netherlands accumulated around 13 million and 6.5 million visits to the website.
Risks in OnlyFans
A report by Panda Security detailed that OnlyFans it has become the “ideal environment” for cybercriminals.
“It is a very sensitive issue. Part of the heart of the matter is that it is a social network made for influencers and celebrities to sell exclusive content to their fans, but although this happens, the human picaresque has made it the ideal environment for young people to earn money by becoming actors and digital porn actresses”, says Hervé Lambert Global Consumer Operations Manager of Panda Security.
Given this, the specialist details in the report that this digital space has the condition of being of legal age to be able to register, but it is a “a reality that is not fulfilled as in many other social networks,” he adds.
It details that registering on the platform is as simple as creating an account and verifying the profile by uploading a selfie with which the platform will confirm the user’s identity. “This is a questionable security measure, because through a photo slightly modified with Photoshop we can impersonate anyone and of any age”, assured.
In that sense, he also adds that thanks to the type of content that is uploaded on the platform where the majority is sexual, it can be “considered as a new door to pornography and digital prostitution.”
The report mentions that the regulation of OnlyFans content and the protection of consumers and creators present legal gaps. For its part, a BBC investigation indicated that one in three users on OnlyFans was not of legal age, “So that adds to the risk of also uploading all kinds of content, not only your own, but even third-party content, makes it an idyllic scenario for cybercriminals to get material to extort money from their victims.”
“Videos of people having sex in public can be uploaded without their knowledge. And, fans of certain channels can even ask for sex in exchange for money, ”says the Panda Security report.
In this sense, as in all social networks or even the Internet, if it is not used well, it can be risky with many implications ranging from cybersecurity, harmful to mental health, harassment, among others. That is why these types of reports exist so that the users of these digital worlds can be responsible and take the necessary measures while they are consumers of these social networks.
