- Although the average salary received by a doctor in Mexico is 17,366 pesos per month, in some entities the figure is much higher.
- Some previous studies have shown that a doctor in Mexico receives almost a third of the average salary of his colleagues in Brazil and Spain.
- In addition to pay, working conditions also influence the number of patients to be treated per day.
One of the main requirements in our country is to offer mBetter salaries for doctors. It has been maintained for decades and although there are improvements, they are still not enough. In addition, when comparing what happens in other countries, the differences become visible, although in the end the same activities must be carried out in all of them.
In that vein, in 2020 the Belisario Domínguez Institute of the Senate of the Republic conducted a study. The result was that doctors in Mexico receive almost a third of the average salary for this profession in countries like Brazil and Spain. The same situation extends to other areas of health such as nursing.
But as in other areas, the remuneration is not the same throughout the national territory. While some entities distinguish themselves by offering more attractive pay to their workers, in others the opposite occurs.
What is the salary of a doctor in Mexico?
A few days ago we shared with you the results of the analysis carried out by the Labor Observatory showing the average monthly salary in each of the 32 entities of the country.
But now the important thing is to know the entities that offer the best salaries to doctors. Based on the same work, there are three and they all agree that they are in the north of the country.
- Chihuahua – 24,840
- Baja California Sur – 24,306
- Sonora – 23,683
In all cases the pay is much higher than the national average. When considering all the entities, an average payment of 17,366 pesos is obtained.
It also contrasts with what was mentioned by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi). According to the level of education, people employed as doctors and who have a bachelor’s degree receive a average monthly salary of 17 thousand 422 pesos. On the other hand, those who have a master’s degree are 21,041 pesos and those who have a doctorate are 26,695 pesos.
Now, although it is the states with the best salaries for doctorsthe figures are too low if you look at what is happening in the rest of the world.
Current panorama in the rest of the world
Based on research, The nation that pays its doctors the best is the United States. When making the conversion, it is obtained that the payment for a year of work is equivalent to four million 330 thousand pesos. That means just over 360 thousand pesos a month.
While Belgium appears in second position. The work indicates that the average annual salary is 3.8 million pesos. This represents 322 thousand pesos per month.
The next nations to appear are Finland, the Netherlands and Norway. In addition to fair payments, they all stand out for their advanced health systems. Each one has attractive well-equipped hospitals that allow doctors to carry out their duties without pressure.
Even if you take into account the “worst” place on the list, which is Denmark, there is a fairly large margin compared to Mexico. In this European country, a doctor has an annual salary of two million 520 thousand pesos. That means up to five times what one receives in our country.
From all of the above, it can be seen that even the entities with the highest salaries for doctors are far below the reality in first world nations.
On the other hand, the days are not the same either because in our country it is quite common to have to attend to large numbers of patients due to the few staff they have. In addition, they do not have the same equipment and real estate that facilitates the work of the doctors.
