To face the current health emergency, the role of the pharmaceutical industry has been essential. Thanks to previous work and new research, various drugs against Covid-19 have been developed. Each one has specific indications about the type of person for whom it is directed. While in the end, everyone’s goal is to reduce the risk of suffering a serious stage of the disease that can lead to the death of the patient.
The importance of updating knowledge
Now, a constant within the field of health is that nothing is absolute. Everything can be improved and updated based on the new scientific evidence that appears. The clearest example can be seen with the use of face masks.
At the beginning of the pandemic, it was said that masks were only useful for sick people. As time passed, it was seen that in reality its use does reduce the probability of contagion. Since then, most of the world’s governments have endorsed that absolutely everyone must wear a face mask. In fact, in some nations it was not a recommendation but an obligation.
With the above in mind, the same goes for drugs against Covid-19. The information on each one is periodically updated and there are new ones that are approved after they manage to demonstrate their usefulness.
In this sense, since last year the Ministry of Health (SSa) presented the Clinical guide for the treatment of Covid-19 in Mexico. The document is aimed at health professionals and contains indications about the treatments indicated to care for patients.
This clinical guideline represents the perspective of representatives of all public institutions in the health sector, which was arrived at after a careful evaluation of the available scientific evidence. Healthcare professionals are expected to consider the entire content of this guideline in conjunction with the needs, abilities, preferences, and values of the patients in their care when exercising their clinical judgment. The guide does not supplant the responsibility of making decisions appropriate to the circumstances of each individual, focusing on people and considering the wishes of their families, caregivers or guardians.
The drugs against Covid-19 that can be used in Mexico
In that sense, just a few days ago we informed you that a new update of the guide was presented. The main novelty is that four drugs were added that did not appear before but were already approved by the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris).
- Paxlovid
- Molnupiravir
- Remdesivir
- Sotrovimab
To this list are added another five that appeared in the earlier version and have shown good results.
- Fluvoxamine
- Unfractionated heparin/enoxaparin
- Dexamethasone or other corticosteroids with equivalent doses
- Oxygen
- Tocilizumab – Il-6 inhibitors
Finally, the tenth option is the Covid-19 vaccine because it is also a medicine. Regardless of the manufacturer, all those that are available in Mexico have passed all the clinical phases to demonstrate that they are useful.
