It should come as no surprise that there have already had to be some sacrifices…
We know that live-action adaptations of anime series don’t have the best reputation among their fans, either because of failures like Cowboy Bebop or works that stray too far from the original product like Dragon Ball Evolution. However, the one from One Piece has the benefit of the doubt because Eiichiro Oda, its creator, is supervising every single detail of production. Despite this, there have been some noticeable changes already.
During a special Netflix broadcast, the company showed a small preview that revealed some notorious modifications of the famous ship designs, something that generated noise among the fandom of the franchise. Not much new information was provided, but Nami’s map room in Arlong Park was discussed, and the official stage designs for Monkey D. Luffy’s hometown, Foosha Village, Going Merry, Miss Love Duck, and Baratie were all shown. . That only covers a fraction of One Piece’s vast setting, but given that season 1 will probably only cover the East Blue Saga at most, it makes sense.
The emblem ship of this season will be the Going Merry, the original ship of the Straw Hat Pirates before its destruction in the Enies Lobby arc and that is why its changes were so pointed out by the fandom. Just like in the One Piece anime, the Going Merry is a brown ship with a sheep figurehead and a large sail with the Jolly Roger from the Straw Hat Pirates, but there are some notable differences. For example, it is shown to be much more angular than the rounded design of the anime and manga, the crossbones are not connected to the skull, and the straw hat is drawn to be slightly torn. The front also hints at a possible change to Luffy’s iconic straw hat.
As for the ship itself, the concept art shows the port side of the Going Merry decorated with what appear to be curling horns, likely to emphasize the sheep theme, and the cannons that were originally deep on the port and starboard sides. they are now much larger, closer to the main gun at the bow of the ship. Nevertheless, the biggest change to the Going Merry comes from her figureheadAs the cartoonish and simplistic design of the sheep figurehead has been replaced with a very realistic sheep design for the One Piece live-action adaptation, the figurehead even now has ears. Perhaps this is one of the biggest changes and, in fact, it was not entirely liked by One Piece fans who pointed out that it was too strange.
More changes are coming to Netflix’s live-action One Piece
Another ship that changed was the Miss Love Duck, the signature ship of one of Luffy’s early enemies in One Piece, Alvida. Of the ships shown so far, the Miss Love Duck has the fewest differences from the original version, but does have some significant modifications. For example, the duck figurehead it’s pink instead of white in the anime, and now has normal eyes instead of the heart-shaped eyes he had in the One Piece anime. Not only that, but the Miss Love Duck’s bow has a pair of folded black wings, the center sail features crossbones below the heart that weren’t there in the source material, and the mast is covered in mirrors, probably like a means to highlight Alvida’s vanity. Beyond that, very few changes appear to have been made to Miss Love Duck in live action.
The last ship shown was the Baratie, the floating restaurant Sanji worked at when the Straw Hat Pirates first met him, and of the three ships shown, it is the one that has undergone the most changes. The original version was very simple with its design and really just had the fish accessories that made it stand out, but the live-action version of One Piece went much further. The Baratie is now decorated with gilded mermaid statues and fish carvings, the Jolly Roger from One Piece’s Cook Pirates, Zeff’s original team, who will be played by EastEnders Craig Fairbrass, can be seen outside the restaurant and according to concept art, the interior will be a large two-story restaurant with a vibrant red color for the stairs and seating and a mural of a sea battle on the ceiling. The fins are now used to provide cookouts for people, and the fish’s figurehead now features a bar inside the mouth.
Honestly, the changes may be varied but they are significant for One Piece fans who have a great passion for this work. In the end, we won’t be able to judge this version until we see it on Netflix.
