In Spain, 16 of the 290 automobile factories that exist in Europe operate. This means that our country is the fourth with the largest number of factories in the sector in a continent that invests more than any other automotive market in the world.
With more than 60,000 million in 2019, Europe remains as the automotive market with the highest investment capacity in the worldpractically matching that carried out by Japan, the United States, China and the rest of the world in the last pre-pandemic period.
This means that being competitive in the European sector must be a priority for the countries of the Old Continent and Spain has traditionally been one of the best positioned for this.
Spain is one of the most representative countries in Europe with 16 factories directly related to the production of vehicles and engines
Now with the transition to electric car in full swingcompeting with an advantage and attracting investment from manufacturers is vital to maintaining a highly competitive position that results in multiple benefits and, of course, thousands of jobs.
But, what is the position of Spain at this time in Europe? The European Association of Automobile Manufacturers (ACEA for its acronym in French) has published a report detailing the number of factories directly related to the automotive sector in each country and throughout the continent, including countries outside the European Union.
From it we can extract general figures such as that in Europe there are a total of 290 factories dedicated to the assembly of automobiles and engines185 of which are in the European Union.

Among all contributing countries, Germany stands out as the most prolific with 41 factorieswith France, Italy and Spain next contributing 30, 22 and 16 respectively (the same number as Poland).

Recently, Volkswagen AG has announced a investment plan 7 billion for its facilities in Spain, including a new battery factory for electric cars in Valencia.
In addition, Ford Motor Company must decide whether to guarantee the continuity of its Almussafes factory through the award of new electric models in the medium and long-term future. On the other hand, Renault has already drawn up an action plan with five new models that will be manufactured in our country, while the future occupation of the Nissan factory in Barcelona remains unknown, more than a year after the announcement of its closure by the Japanese firm.
Will Spain know how to place itself in a predominant position in the face of the new scenario offered by the transition to electric mobility?
