This Friday is the World Day Against Suicide Prevention, a silent pandemic that hardly has news coverage (especially if we compare it with homicides).
In Spain they took their own lives 3,671 people in 2019, according to the latest definitive data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE). There are ten people a day. One every two and a half hours. Suicide became the main external cause of death.
75% are men
There were 3,671 suicides in 2019. Compare it to traffic accidents, which killed 1,755 people. 10 times more suicides than homicides 67 times more suicides than deaths due to gender violence. 75% of suicides are men.
Suicide is “multifactorial” and there are no general rules to understand all cases, but they do all have in common a “vital anguish” related to an education that hides suffering, failure or ruin. In the following video, at least, we focus on two factors that seem quite decisive:
