the outbreak of Monkeypox continues to expand in Mexico and until August 29, 504 infections have been confirmed in 25 states of the country. Although one of the most important points is that so far no deaths have been reported, although there is a suspected case under investigation.
Based on the updated figures from the Ministry of Health (SSa) there are a total of 1,146 people who meet the operational definition of a probable case. Of that number there are 504 that are already confirmed. In addition there are 252 under study and 390 discarded by laboratory test.
Possible first death from monkeypox in Mexico is not confirmed
Meanwhile, one person died of septic shock, acquired pneumonia and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. During his medical care, lesions consistent with monkeypox were identified and, when tested, it was positive. The death is carefully analyzed by a group of experts in infectology to determine if there is a cause attributable to monkeypox virus infection.
The Institute of Epidemiological Diagnosis and Reference (InDRE) reported that the positive cases are distributed in 25 states:
Mexico City, 279 infections; Jalisco, 84; State of Mexico, 31; Yucatan, 29; Quintana Roo, 14; Baja California, nine; Chiapas, nine; Nuevo León, nine; Veracruz, five; Guanajuato, four; Puebla, four; Tabasco, four; Chihuahua, three; Morelos, three; Queretaro, three; Colima, two; Oaxaca, two; Sinaloa, two; Sound, two; Aguascalientes, one; Baja California Sur, one; Coahuila, one; Michoacan, one; San Luis Potosí, one, and Zacatecas, one.
Profile of monkeypox cases in Mexico
Of the total confirmed cases, 97 percent correspond to men and three percent to women; 47 percent of people are between 30 and 39 years old, that is, 238 of the 504 confirmed. Also, five are under 20 years old; 112, from 20 to 29; 110 between 40 and 49; 33 from 50 to 59; and six people, 60 years or older.
As of August 26, 46,869 confirmed cases were reported worldwide in 100 countries, territories and areas in the six regions of the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as 15 deaths.
This disease is transmitted by direct contact with the secretions of a sick person through mucosa or skin lesions, respiratory droplets and objects contaminated with body fluids. The illness lasts an average of 21 days.
It can be prevented by avoiding direct physical contact with people who are sick or suspected of having the disease. Sexual contact is an activity that must be taken into account, since it is spread by very close contact between two or more people.
There are practices that can increase the risk of infection, including monkeypox, such as: sex with unknown people, dark rooms or sex parties; this, due to the close contact between people during these activities.
Those who care for family members with the disease should wash the sick person’s clothes, towels and sheets and eating utensils with warm water and detergent; also, clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces. In case of presenting symptoms, patients should avoid approaching other people and not go to public places.
