Listed as an international public health emergency by the WHO, the Monkeypox continues to increase throughout the planet and Mexico is no exception. The Weekly Technical Report on Epidemiological Surveillance in our country details that 610 people have been identified who meet the operational definition of probable case. Of that figure there 252 that are confirmed131 under study and 227 have been ruled out by means of a laboratory test.
Where have most cases of monkeypox occurred in Mexico?
The Institute of Epidemiological Diagnosis and Reference (InDRE) reported that the positive cases are distributed in 20 states: Mexico City, 141 infections; Jalisco, 46; Yucatan, 15; State of Mexico, nine; Quintana Roo, nine; Baja California, four; Chiapas, four; Nuevo Leon, four; Veracruz, four; Tabasco, three; Oaxaca, two; Puebla, two; Colima, two; Baja California Sur, one; Chihuahua, one; Michoacan, one; Morelos, one; Queretaro, one; San Luis Potosí, one and Sinaloa, one.
Regarding the distribution by sex, 94 percent of the infections correspond to men and six percent to women; 45.6 percent are men between 30 and 39 years old.
As of August 12, the world has registered 34,081 confirmed cases in 92 countries, territories and areas in the six WHO regions, in addition to 12 deaths.
They add up to 252 infections of monkeypox in 20 entities of the country.

How is monkeypox spread?
This disease is transmitted by direct contact with the secretions of a sick person through mucosa or skin lesions, respiratory droplets and objects contaminated with body fluids.
It can be prevented by avoiding direct physical contact with people who are sick or suspected of having the disease. Sexual contact is an activity that must be taken into account, since it is spread by very close contact between two or more people.
Those who care for family members with the disease should wash the sick person’s clothes, towels and sheets and eating utensils with warm water and detergent; also, clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces. In case of presenting symptoms, patients should avoid approaching other people and go to public places.
While in this official portal of the Health Secretary (SSa) offers information available for the population, as well as for health personnel who care for patients with suspected disease. The site is constantly being formed as more evidence is obtained to prevent and treat the disease.
