- This disease lasts an average of 21 days, and is transmitted by direct contact with the secretions of a sick person through mucous membranes or skin lesions, respiratory droplets, and objects contaminated with body fluids.
- Of all the deaths registered in Mexico, four were found to be directly related to the virus that causes MPOX.
- So far, 83,497 confirmed cases have been identified in 110 countries, territories and areas in the six WHO regions, as well as 72 deaths.
One of the health problems that received the most attention during 2022 was monkeypox. Even the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the emergency as an international emergency. Although it has lost relevance in recent weeks, it cannot be overlooked that MPOX, as it is also known, can cause serious conditions that result in deaths and even fatal cases have already occurred in Mexico.
To begin with, since last November 23 the name change was made official. The WHO recalled that nicknames should never generate stigma or discriminatory acts. A clear example is what happened a century ago with the Spanish flu. Although it is proven that the first cases were not generated in Spain but in the United States, it is the name by which it was known throughout the planet.
Since then it was made official that monkeypox or monkeypox should now be named as MPOX. It is about his new name that was proposed by officials of the Joe Biden administration in the United States. After careful analysis, the recommendation was accepted.
Current panorama in Mexico
About, The Ministry of Health (SSa) reported that during the last two weeks 128 cases were registered in the country. With this, a total of 3,637 infections have been confirmed since the first record on May 28, 2022.
The Fortnightly Technical Report of Epidemiological Surveillance in Mexico refers to a decrease in probable and confirmed cases per week during the last 10 weeks, and in 52 only nine probable infections have been detected.
Deaths associated with MPOX in Mexico
Until December 26, 12 deaths were identified, of which four are directly related to infection by the MPOX virus. Two are not due to this direct cause, and six are being analyzed by a group of experts in infectious disease and epidemiology to define whether there is a causal association between death and infection.
Regarding the victims, there are 11 men and one woman, who during medical care presented injuries compatible with MPOX and which, after the laboratory study, were confirmed.
