It has long been rumored that the Xbox Series X development kits have an exaggerated amount of RAM, much higher than that of the consumer model that we can all have at home, and finally it seems to be true. A popular youtuber has managed to get hold of one of these models and by disassembling it, he has been able to verify that, certainly, he has more than twice the RAM of any Xbox Series X.
Beyond their cooling design and architecture, more similar to the Xbox One X than the Xbox Series X, what has most surprised Gamers Nexus when disassembling this Xbox Series development kit is that, unlike the consumer model, this version has modules memory on both sides of the motherboard. Up to a total of 40GB of GDDR6 RAMcompared to 16 GB of GDDR6 RAM in the domestic model.
While the Xbox Series X home model features 16GB of GDDR6 RAM divided into High-speed 10 GB at 560 GB/s, and another 6 GB at 336 GB/s, this development kit has 10 chips of 2GB of GDDR6 RAM on both sides of the motherboard, making a total of 40 GB, much higher than any PC graphics card in common use. It would only be surpassed by the RTX A6000, with 48 GB of GDDR6 RAM at a price of $5,000.
This exaggerated amount of RAM memory is due to the fact that it needs to have a plenty of bandwidth to allow working with uncompressed textures and unoptimized builds at all, which would facilitate the work of developers to a great extent. It is common for development kits to have extra features that domestic models do not have, but 40 GB of GDDR6 RAM is truly amazing.
