With iOS 14.5, Apple launched an interesting new feature in the Weather app. This is the precipitation forecast for the next hour. The feature, currently only available to US users, provides detailed 60-minute rain or snow forecast in the Weather app and its corresponding widgets. A novelty that comes after the acquisition of Dark Sky by Apple.
Weather will hurt the competition
Visible in several countries according to some users (Ireland, England, France), precipitation is now displayed minute by minute for the hour to come.
Users started seeing detailed reports in Weather after installing iOS 14.5 beta.
Apple is logically based on the popular Dark Sky weather data aggregation application acquired last March. The app was among the first to take advantage of multiple weather stations and proprietary algorithms to deliver accurate hyper-local forecasts to smartphone users.
Apple, therefore, intends to roll out the new Weather feature with iOS 14.5 in new countries. A feature that will hurt competitors like AccuWeather who had made detailed precipitation an argument.
