Apple will need to allow developers to redirect to other payment systems.
The judicial battle between Manzana and Epic games seems to be coming to an end. Recently, the judge in the case has ruled, and the conclusion will not be to the taste of Apple’s top executives, although Apple will also receive a hefty amount of money.
After the developers at Epic Games introduced an alternative payment system To avoid paying App Store commissions, Apple decided to delete the Epic Games developer account and remove the game from its store.
After this mishap, Epic Games sued Apple and both companies have been involved in a series of lawsuits. Now the judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers has decided that Apple cannot prohibit developers from redirecting users to other payment systems.
«Apple Inc. […] should permanently refrain from forbidding developers to include buttons, external links and other calls to action in their applications and their metadata to direct customers to purchase devices. “
The popular video game Fortnite has been withdrawn from the App Store for more than a year and everything seems to indicate that it will not return imminently. From Epic Games they have requested the return of Fortnite to the store but Apple has rejected the request.
Now that the judge has ruled, Apple will have to rethink the situation. Be that as it may, the judge also ruled that Epic Games will have to pay Apple a specific amount of money for economic damages, since the developers they skipped an App Store rule by adding a payment option in Fortnite without notifying Apple.
“Epic Games will be required to pay damages in the amount of 30% of the $ 12,167,719 they obtained from users on the Fortnite iOS app through Epic Direct Payment between August and October 2020.”
In addition, Epic Games will have to pay 30% of any income it has made from November 1 to the date of the trial, plus interest.
