Director Gavin O’Connor (Warrior) explains why his Suicide Squad script was rejected a few years ago.
The movie of The Suicide Squad 2016 was not liked by critics or fans, however, it was a box office success exceeding 746 million dollars. Because Warner Bros. wanted to make a sequel and looked for a new director to replace David Yesterday. So they commissioned a script from Gavin o’connor responsible of Warrior (2011), Jane’s revenge (2015) and The accountant (2016). At first they asked for something more serious and dark, but then there was a change in the managers and they wanted something with more humor.
“What happened there was that I made a deal to write a script and they knew what I was writing. At that level, with those types of movies, with that budget, nobody goes and writes something without explaining what the movie is going to be. And everyone was fine with it. What happened was that during the latter part of the script writing there was a complete regime change at DC Comics. And when that happened, they wanted Suicide Squad to be a comedy, and I said, I’m not writing a comedy. I mean, it was fun, but it’s not a festival of humor. And the new regime wanted a different film than the one it was writing. “
So we won’t be able to see that movie of The Suicide Squad from Gavin o’connor but at least we already have a new version that has liked a lot although it is a box office failure, since it has only raised 164 million dollars.
