Today we are going to Navarra to learn about the comprehensive reform of a single-family home that bears the signature of RQS Studio, directed by interior designer Rober Quiñones-Her. The owners of this house are a family with two children who dreamed of changing their small apartment to live in a larger house with outdoor space.
Some friends of theirs decided to put this house up for sale in a Navarrese town, and the couple did not think twice, and although at first they were reluctant to get involved in works, they finally carried out a Integral reformexcept in the patio and the cellar in the basement, which they leave for later.
The house is one independent house of almost 100 square meters distributed on one floor with lots of natural light. From the interior design studio they had absolute freedom to carry out the reform, since the only and main request from the owners was to have plenty of storage space“something understandable considering that they came from a small apartment, and we managed to take advantage of every corner,” explains Quiñones-Her.
From the moment he saw the house, the interior designer was clear that an integral house had to be created. Not only for aesthetic reasons, but also because the house was more than 50 years old, and it was necessary to carry out structural reforms. And for three months the demolition, masonry, tiling, electrical installations, as well as the manufacture of custom furniture were carried out.
In the project, and as a common thread, the use of vertical walnut wood slats in various elements of furniture and decorative details. Other resources that RQH Studio implements around the house are the use of moldings, which provide that classic and elegant touch, in addition to wallpaper in all rooms.
The entrance, with a cladding of wooden slats
The access to housing already tells us that special care has been taken in the design of this house. The entrance connects directly with the living room, and to safeguard family privacy, the interior design studio designed an original cube-shaped piece clad in walnut wood slats that prevents direct vision into the house. Said piece, made expressly for the project, also integrates a console-type piece of furniture, thus creating the atmosphere of a small and practical hall, which did not exist before.
Along the entrance wall has been placed a large built-in cupboard for storage. The fronts are completely smooth, without handles and with a ‘push’ opening effect, to generate a view that is as discreet and as integrated as possible in the space. The combination of the white color of the wardrobe that contrasts with the wood finish of the cube and its location at the entrance of the house represent the aesthetic line chosen for this project, based on very neutral, ocher and white tones. and the use of wood, also on the floor.
Wood, protagonist of the living room
Given its dimensions, the interior design studio proposed designing the living room exclusively as such, dispensing with the dining area to integrate it into the kitchen. On the sofa, the leading role is played by a chaise longue in bone color, as well as the curtains, the lampshade and a puff that acts as an auxiliary seat.
In front of the sofa stands out the custom made furniture with a design by RQH Studio for this house, and that once again alternates walnut wood with white. Its L-shape is distributed in a lateral part dedicated to a bookcase and air conditioning equipment (air conditioning and radiator) that are hidden and another frontal part that integrates the fireplace, the television and tall cabinets.
Kitchen, mix of white and wood
From the living room and following the longitudinal arrangement of the oak parquet slats, the steps lead directly to the kitchen. From RQH Studio they have designed the kitchen furniture in white, combined with a veined porcelain tile of the same color for the countertop and the cladding.
The interior designer has created two areas by arranging the kitchen furniture. “The first area is L-shaped, and is intended for the work area, including the water and cooking area, and integrating all the appliances, and another one designed as a living area next to the dining room to complement its needs” Quiñones-Her explains.
By including the dining room in the kitchen, wood has been introduced for the table and the lamp and, once again, playing with the star combination of the project in terms of tones and finishes. In this case, wood is introduced into the design of the kitchen cabinet itself, with a niche covered in walnut wood that stands out against the general immaculate white.
The objective is to generate that aesthetic and functional differentiating element linked to the dining area, also complemented by the wallpaper that dresses the walls in this area, in a very harmonious herringbone finish, and which enhances even more that cozy feeling that is search here.
The headboard, protagonist of the bedroom
The couple’s bedroom is located in the room adjoining the kitchen. In it, the design of the headboard created from a plasterboard frame covered with a white panel of diagonal lines, the same one that has been used in one of the walls of the living room.
This front has been completed with a detail of small walnut wood slats at the top that seem to seek visual continuity with the headboard. This one, upholstered in velvet in a dark stone tone, is also finished with vertical lines.
The youth bedrooms
The children’s bedrooms are reached after crossing a small hallway decorated with moldings, also in the doors. In these rooms there has hardly been any intervention, since part of the existing youth furniture was used, which was in perfect condition.
The RQH Studio team implemented in both rooms the same aesthetic as in the entire house based on the choice of neutral tonessuch as white for furniture, lamps and textiles, with the sole license of a slightly darker neutral tone on the wallpaper to highlight the wall of the bed.
The bathroom, spacious and with a double sink
Since the house has a single bathroomfrom the interior design studio, designed a large space with a double sink, replacing the existing bathtub with a large shower that runs from end to end of the room.
In the room, the white color stands out with the black details of the taps, accessories and the mirror frame. It also highlights the custom designed wooden furniturelooking for that desire of the owners to have storage space.
Walnut wood is also introduced in the bathroom with this original multifunctional piecesince in its lower part it hides the toilet tank, the upper part serves as a cupboard and in the central part a backlit niche has been designed for decorative pieces.
