If you thought that adaptations of YA novels were already a thing of the past, you are very wrong. Netflix seems to be the new home for all those stories looking to make the leap from paper to screen. We finally have the trailer for The school of good and evil, fantasy that promises to become the new youth phenomenon. Here we present it to you and tell you all the details.
Synopsis
The story takes place in a place called Gavaldon, there we will meet Sophie and Agatha, two friends with opposite souls. The first is a fan of fairy tales and their magic, while the other has the soul of a witch. During a night of red moon, both are taken to the School of good and evil. From that moment on, everything becomes a nightmare, because they go to the area that does not belong to them. Sophie stays at the School for Evil, run by Lady Lesso, and Agatha stays at the School for Good, where Dovey leads.
The interesting thing is that in each area there are also the children of mythical story characters, and only the union of all will be the key to defeating a sinister and mysterious figure that threatens to destroy everything. The school of good and evil is based on the series of young adult novels written by Soman Chainani, which already has six books.
The cast and production team
Without a doubt, beyond the fantasy and magic that it promises, one of the most attractive elements in this film is the cast that makes it up. Rising Stars Sofia Wylie (Andy Mack) and Sophia Anne Caruso (Strangers) will star in this project as Agatha and Sophie, respectively.
She is joined by Charlize Theron as the villain of this story, and the actress already has her track record giving life to the bad girl in films like snow white and the huntsman or the franchise Fast and furious. While Kerry Washington (Django Unchained) will embody the leader of the School of Good.
As if that wasn’t enough, the cast will include Laurence Fishburne (Matrix), Michelle Yeoh (Everything everywhere at the same time), Ben Kingsley (Shang-Chi and the legend of the Ten Rings) and Cate Blanchett (Thor: Raganarok) as the narrator. Without a doubt, a cast that many directors would like to have.
The production was originally from Universal, however Netflix bought the rights in 2020. Paul Feig (Ladies at War, Ghostbusters) is the director of the film, while the script is in charge of Vanessa Taylor (Divergent, The Shape of Water), David Magee and Feig himself.
What can we expect from The school of good and evil?
Although it can easily seem like any other fantasy we’ve seen in recent years, this film has a personality of its own. One of its main characteristics is the diversity of its cast, which appeals to the interest of all young audiences. Thanks to Netflix acquiring the rights to the film, fans can look forward to an adaptation closer to the source material.
The author of the novels had some input in this process and spoke to The Knockturnal about what we will see in this anticipated film:
“Paul (Feig) is one of those directors who can do anything – comedy, action, fantasy, thriller – and here we combine all those genres in one film. There is very little CGI compared to your typical fantasy movie. It is very tangible, practical and real. Netflix is the best place to work as an author, I can’t even tell you how collaborative they were with me from the beginning. This is not Hogwarts. This is the fantasy school of the future, where anything is possible. as i say in Beasts and Beautymy next book, the old fairy tales are dead”.

John Joseph Cruz I am one of those who always defended Robert Pattinson as Batman and can see the same movie in the cinema up to 7 times. My guilty pleasure? Low budget horror movies.
