In May of last 2021, the foundations of the film and television industry that we knew were shaken again after the news that amazon had bought the legendary studio MGM in an operation that would be around 8,450 million dollars. Well, today, almost a year later, the acquisition has been officially closed.
The multimillionaire maneuver has completed its execution two days after the European Union’s antitrust regulator gave the go-ahead. Finally, the total amount of the purchase was 8,500 million dollars, thanks to which Jeff Bezos’s company has come to own a catalog of more than 4,000 movies and 17,000 television series, including licenses such as James Bond, The Pink panther or Rocky.
mike hopkins, Senior Vice President of Prime Video and Amazon Studioshas thus celebrated the operation.
“MGM has a nearly century-long legacy of producing exceptional entertainment, and we share its commitment to bringing a wide range of original movies and television series to audiences around the world. We welcome Prime Video and Amazon Studios to MGM’s creators, employees and talent, and we look forward to working together to create even more opportunities to deliver quality stories to our customers.”
For his part, Chris Breaton, MGM COO has added the following:
“We are excited to have MGM and its many iconic franchises, movies and TV series, and our amazing team and creative partners, join the Prime Video family. MGM has been responsible for creating some of the most well-known movies and series and critically acclaimed movies from the last century. We look forward to continuing that tradition as we venture into this new chapter, teaming up with the great team at Prime Video and Amazon Studios to bring audiences the best in entertainment for years to come.”
From this moment on, all that remains is to wait patiently and see how the people of Amazon nourish their catalog taking advantage of the new and juicy string of licenses that you have in your hands; what could be a goose that lays the golden eggs in this time of nostalgia, reboots and looks to the past.
