- Currently, it is estimated that one in two people uses over-the-counter drugs for their health care.
- With self-care actions, it is estimated that by 2030 up to 4.6 billion productive days could be saved.
- Self-care is an excellent strategy to guarantee access and sustainability of the public health system.
under the International Self-Care Day, which is commemorated every July 24, it is worth remembering its importance within public health systems. Promoting good habits is the basis of prevention and thus avoid developing a large number of diseases and conditions. But how can it really be achieved?
To begin with, the health systems of Latin America, including Mexico, face significant challenges and limitations, both economic and in the capacity of care. It all stems from changing demographics, the rising prevalence of chronic non-communicable diseases, and problems in the health care infrastructure. In fact, by 2030, a global shortage of close to 18 million health professionals is expected1.
According to a study conducted by the Latin American Association for Responsible Self-Care (ILAR) in 2022, it was discovered that the contribution of self-care can be very significant in health systems.
Only by 2030 can a savings of 13 billion dollars in the health system, 1.6 billion hours invested by patients, 217 million hours by health professionals and 4.6 billion productive days by people1.
“Currently, the country is facing an increase in health conditions such as chronic pain, heartburn, indigestion and gastric discomfort; as well as vitamin deficiency, oral health problems or recurring colds and flu. These diseases represent a significant burden for the health system and have a negative impact on people’s quality of life,” says Roberto Beyrute, Haleon’s General Manager for Mexico.
In that sense, the self-care is an effective strategy to address these health challenges. By adopting appropriate habits, such as a balanced diet, regular physical activity, adequate rest and avoiding the use of harmful substances, each person can have a positive impact on their own health and well-being.
The Covid-19 pandemic emphasized the limitations of primary health care systems and highlighted the urgent need to address self-care as an alternative that guarantees people greater autonomy to take actions in their health care.
“Empowering people to practice self-care and actively participate in decision-making about their own health is essential. For this reason, at Haleon we are committed to promoting it strongly and working every day to promote a culture of health and well-being, encouraging all Mexicans to be protagonists of their own well-being”.
Without a doubt, encourage responsible self-care not only has a positive impact on the health of the population, but also generates significant economic savings and contributes to a more sustainable and efficient healthcare system. Therefore, it is imperative to promote awareness and education on this issue to build a healthier and more prosperous future for all.
