Although his character was well received by the public and critics after his appearance in the first installment, Demián Bichir’s character does not appear in the nun 2the new spin-off of the universe of The spell and sequel to The nun (2018).
However, there was a point during production when it was planned to bring Father Burke back for another confrontation with Valak (Bonnie Aarons) in the company of Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga).
WARNING: They are coming SPOILERS of the nun 2
Although Father Burke did not die in the first installment – an issue that seemed to ensure his place in the sequel – in the sequel he is eliminated from the story somewhat abruptly and with a simple dialogue.
When the Vatican comes to Irene to inform her that they require her help because Valak survived and is causing the deaths of several members of the Church, she asks where the cleric is, to which she is told that he died from cholera.

But, although Bichir is no longer part of the project, director Michael Chaves wanted the character to be an integral part of the narrative, even if it meant giving a strange justification for his return. In an interview with Collider, said that Bichir was considered to appear as a zombie. These were his words:
«I throw out a lot of crazy ideas. [Ríe] It was one of many ideas, so I don’t know how far it went. I think I probably killed her while she was still in her crib. But in the end, you want the movie to be a funhouse of scares, and you want Valak to be throwing everything he has at our characters, so that was into consideration. But I don’t know if we could have brought back Father Burke just to have him be a zombie.”.
In addition, he added that he did not want the film to be saturated with characters, so that the new additions to the cast could shine:
«There were so many great characters from the first movie. I think we really wanted to introduce Storm [Reid]. I think we wanted to introduce another nun, and so it became a balance of, ‘How big does this team get?’ How many stories can we carry?’”

José Roberto Landaverde I am fascinated by writing, listening, reading and commenting on everything related to cinema. I love music and I am a fan of The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac and Paramore. My favorite movies are Rocky and Back to the Future and obviously one day I will climb the “Philly Steps” and drive a DeLorean. Faithful believer that cinema is the best teleporting machine, and also that on the big screen we can all see ourselves represented.
