the vast universe of The spell continues to grow, with a ninth installment scheduled to premiere at the end of the summer of this year. The movie in question is the nun 2sequel to the terrifying 2018 film, which itself served as spin-off and prequel to The spell 2.
Set in the 50s, the saga of the nun It is about the demon Valak and his gloomy actions in the human world. The first film was directed by Corin Hardy and, despite negative reviews, managed to become a box office success thanks to its $365 million dollars grossed globally. Will the second part be able to keep the money streak going and perhaps get more favorable reviews? Next, we tell you everything you need to know about this upcoming sequel.
What is it about the nun 2?
Four years have passed since the events of the first film. Sister Irene tries to live a peaceful life as a fully ordained nun in a convent in Italy. Unfortunately, her plan is thwarted by the return of that evil entity she knows so well, and she ends up taking possession of her friend Maurice.
Warner Bros. Pictures offers the following official synopsis:
“France, 1956. A priest is assassinated. An evil spreads. The sequel to the great worldwide success the nun follows Sister Irene in a showdown with the demonic force Valak, the Demon Nun.”
The direction is in charge of michael chavezwho takes the reins for the third time within the universe of The spellafter having directed The curse of La Llorona (2019) and The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021). The script was co-written by Akela Cooperwho comes to lend his pen to M3GAN (2022) and Evil one (2021), in complicity with Ian Goldberg and Richard Naingfellow writers of the television series fear the walking dead.
“Maurice arrives in France and is working in a boarding school as an assistant,” Chaves tells Entertainment Weekly. “You can see that he’s starting to mature, so that’s where our characters start. But we know from the first movie that there is something terrible inside him, that Valak escaped with him, and events push Irene back on this collision course with her old friend.”
The cast
This sequel to the nun boasts the return of Taissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet and Bonnie Aaronsin the roles of Sister Irene, Maurice (aka Frenchie) and Valak, respectively.
On the other hand, he joins the cast Anna Popplewellwho we best remember as Susan Pevensie in the film saga The Chronicles of Narnia, and who here plays Marcella, a religious school teacher in France. She accompanies the young actress Katelyn Rose Downey (Princess) in the role of Sophie, Marcella’s daughter, as well as the actress of Euphoria and The Last of Us, Storm Reidwho gives life to a nun with a key role in the story.
“The character I play is incredible. I think he brings a fun touch to the story and I love that,” Reid told Collider in January 2023. “It’s scary, but there are so many story arcs in the movie and so many emotions and journeys they have to go through, that I think it works perfectly.”
What to expect from the sequel?
Linking to Storm Reid’s comments quoted above, director Michael Chavez confirmed to ew ue Valak will bring with him some of his comrades from the previous movie.
“The faceless nuns are back,” said the filmmaker. “That was one of the fan-favorite aspects and it also became part of the marketing campaign for the first film. So they’re definitely back in the movie. I don’t want to spoil anything else [sobre ellas]”.
On the other hand, the also producer james wan has been clear for years that the saga of the nun is meant to connect with the Lorraine Warren story established in the first two installments of The spellfor the sake of “making the circle close” (via The Hollywood Reporter). It should be remembered that the film the nun from 2018 concludes with Maurice/Frenchie being possessed by Valak, and fans know that Valak will eventually be exorcised by the Warrens. Therefore, it is expected that the exorcism of said character establishes the definitive bridge with The spell and may the sequel continue to move in that direction.
“Anyone who is a fan knows the timeline and this is definitely part of the timeline,” Chavez added. “There are a lot of great things in the sequel. I honestly can’t wait until it’s out so I can talk about all the little easter egg that we have placed throughout the film.”
Also, with the nun 2 a more “stylistically pleasing” sequel is promised compared to the original film, according to reports ScreenRant.
When it premieres the nun 2?
the nun 2 arrives at the Mexican theaters September 7, 2023, exactly five years after the release of the first installment. The sequel will be available at preview screenings starting on September 6.
