One of the applications that has received the fewest updates over the decades is Notepad. A simple text editor that fulfilled its function and little more was asked of it. Now, with Windows 11 everything has changed and it has adopted the dark theme and other improvements.
But, if you thought that it was not going to receive more updates, you are very wrong. Microsoft already has announced They’re working on new features for Notepad beyond the dark theme in this simple text editor. Let’s see what they are working on and when these improvements should arrive.
Notepad is now more than just a text editor
Now the new Notepad in Windows 11 has added new improvements to the feature RichEdit. New enhancements include “Alt+x to enter Unicode characters, Ctrl+} to toggle between matching brackets/parentheses, multi-level undo, drag and drop, colored emoji, block selection, and automatic URL detection.”
Thanks to the update, users will no longer have to deal with troublesome Unix convention lines ending with LF (U+000A) instead of CRLF (U+000D U+000A). “To fix this problem, Notepad goes further: checking which line ending comes first, and then making that line ending the default for the file. Thus, a file with lines ending in LF still ends in LF and is displayed correctly. «
Therefore, thanks to this update, users will be able to access all the functions available in the classic application, since are compatible with RichEdit. That said, displaying Unicode control characters will now work in this new version of the app which also includes emojis.
The version of RichEdit used in Notepad comes from the same sources as the RichEdit that is loaded into Microsoft 365 apps like Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote. It is not the Windows RichEdit found in msftedit.dll. Therefore, Notepad has the latest RichEdit enhancements.
A great little addition that we will see if the most staunch users of Notepad appreciate. We are happy to see how the Windows team is working harder than ever to offer apps and a system according to current hardware.
