A new spot from Los Eternos recalls the now mythical phrase of Captain America in Avengers: Endgame
In just a few weeks, Marvel Studios will release its 26th film with Chloé Zhao’s Eternals. By introducing more than a dozen important new characters to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this film will help fans learn about the franchise’s early days in history, as well as follow up on recent events.
Using a blast from the past by showing the arrival of the Eternals to Earth about 7000 years ago, much of the plot will address a world in flux after Bruce Banner snapped his fingers and brought back half the life of the universe. An event that fundamentally changed the general history of the UCM as we have been able to see throughout the new releases of Marvel studios since Avengers: Endgame, with Spider-man: Far From Home, Loki, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, or Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings to give some examples.
Additionally, since the Eternals have resided on Earth for millennia, the team is aware of the exploits of Earth’s mightiest Heroes, who are teased throughout the film. A new spot that includes new images from the film, refer to one of the most important moments in the history of the UCM.
In a television commercial, Richard Madden’s Ikaris utters the phrase “Eternal reunions”, a direct reference to Chris Evans’ long-awaited Captain America quote Avengers Assemble during the final battle of Avengers: Endgame. Ikaris’s phrase can be seen in the second 20 of the spot that you can see below:
Sarcasm or Ikaris’s admiration for the Avengers?
Throughout the marketing campaign of The Eternals, it has been made clear that immortal aliens are well acquainted with Earth’s mightiest heroes, with mentions of the Avengers in their trailers. While they certainly have a certain level of respect for the team that has kept Earth safe since they first met in 2012, there seems to be a sense that the Eternals may have other feelings for them besides admiration.
It seems more likely than Steve Rogers’ battle cry from Endgame, which was also teased at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, he found his way to the world after the team defeated Thanos, which is why Ikaris makes his own version of the phrase. The big question is if the line is a tribute to the Avengers or if he is using it as a joke, which he has done in other trailers.
In the first full trailer for the film, Ikaris jokingly blurted out that he could be the new leader of the Avengers after Sprite mentioned that both Iron Man and Captain America were gone. Being one of the most powerful characters in this movie, it seems like he can feel a certain level of competition against two of Earth’s most beloved men after they saved the world so many times.
While this movie will undoubtedly focus on the Eternals making their long-awaited introduction to the MCU, the events of Avengers: Endgame they are simply impossible to ignore, especially as long as these new heroes have been on Earth. Ikaris’s attitude towards the Avengers will be something to keep in mind, especially as he shows his own leadership style with his own team.
