Today, August 31, 2021, 24 years ago Lady Di passed away in a tragic traffic accident that continues to cause controversy after more than two decades. Princess Diana is one of the most beloved figures of the English monarchy in history and her legacy lives on more than ever (thanks also, in part, to the success of the series The Crown).
Natural, close and discreet, Lady Di managed to woo a large part of society and some of their looks more mythical have been etched in our retina by fire. Nothing better than to pay tribute to Diana on such a remarkable day by recalling the outfits that elevated her as a style icon of the 80s and 90s.
David Emanuel’s spectacular wedding dress
We started in style with the impressive wedding dress that she wore at her wedding with Carlos de Gales. The design, created by David Emanuel, it was especially notable for its voluminous puffed silk taffeta sleeves, a complex ruffled neckline and a corseted bodice. This dress marked Diana’s transition from “girl” to wife and her official entry into the British royal family.
The timeless pink polka dot dress
Like many others royals, Lady Di repeated a model on several occasions and this pink midi dress with white polka dots was one of the star pieces in her wardrobe. Diana wore it in 1983 on an official visit to Australia and we also saw it at a stop in Rome. Kate Middleton bet last 2020 on a very similar design signed by Oscar de la Renta.
The dress she danced in with John Travolta
We traveled to 1985 to talk about one of the moments when we saw a happy and relaxed Lady Di: the gala organized by Nancy and Ronald Reagan at the White House for the English monarchs. In this photograph we see Diana dancing with John Travolta with a beautiful navy blue mermaid dress, designed by Victor Edelstein. Diana of Wales opted for this design again for an official trip to Austria in 1986 and in 1991 to go to the Royal Opera House From london.
The blue dress that conquered in Cannes
Diana arrived at the Cannes Film Festival in 1987 in a pastel blue dress that is still present in our memory. The dress, signed by Catherine Walker, conquered all hearts thanks to the blue silk chiffon with Greek pleats, a beautiful fall and a flattering strapless neckline. Over the years it has been commented that this design It is inspired by the dress Grace Kelly wore in 1955 to promote the film To Catch a Thief.
The “Sleeping Beauty” design
One of the most talked about snapshots in the history of Lady Di portrays her sleeping in 1981 at an event held at the Victoria & Albert museum. The press of the time commented that this photo caused the ire of Prince Charles (Diana was christened “Sleeping Beauty”), but we were left with the beautiful dress she wore for the occasion. Designer duo Bellville Sassoon (Belinda Bellville and David Sassoon) signed this princess-inspired dream piece.
The “Elvis” set
On a trip to Hong Kong in 1989 Diana opted for dress Elvis by Catherine Walker. Actually, we are talking about a combo consisting of a long design with a straight silhouette, a slight opening in the skirt and a bolero jacket with French sleeves. Why this name? A clear nod to the true “King of Rock” thanks to the funnel neck of the jacket.
The look that could be part of Celine’s latest collection
We jump to looks Informal of Lady Di, in which she shone with her own light, and that continue to be a source of inspiration more than 20 years later (that they say it to the last proposals of Celine). This is one of our favorites: a style made up of a blazer oversize pinstripe, a loose sweatshirt, jeans style mom, baseball cap and country boots. Date of 1988, but we could wear it tomorrow to go to the office.
The mythical sheep sweater
Who does not remember this iconic knitted sheep sweater? This design, which was emulated by Oysho last season, was created by Smith’s Lawn and worn by Diana in 1983. To combine it, white pants and red shoes, he did not need anything else to show that comfort was one of the main characteristics of his style.
Bikers + sweatshirt, the most modern combo of the moment
We know: it could be Lady Di or Hailey Bieber. Diana advanced one of the trends that are currently successful: combine bikers with an overzie sweatshirt, sports shoes chunky and some high socks. This photo, taken in 1995, shows that the passing of the years does not go through the modernity of its outfits.
